The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Harold Mitchell, Sr., its interim coordinator of football officials. Mitchell will replace Gil Marchman, who was named coordinator of officials in the fall of 2006.
Mitchell will coordinate the scheduling, training and supervision of all the conference’s football officials, as well as assist the conference office with matters dealing with the sport.
“We would like to thank Mr. Marchman for his contributions as coordinator of officials. We wish him the best in the future.” said Duer Sharp, interim commissioner.
Mitchell has served as an official and technical advisor for more than 30 years. His career began as a back judge in the College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin in 1973. In 1977, he moved to the Mid-Continent Conference (now the Gateway Conference), as well as the Big Ten Conference. In 1990, he became an official with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and joined the Southeastern Conference as a back judge in 1991. In 1998, he began serving as a referee with the SEC. In 2002, he served as a technical advisor for officiating with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; from 2004 until 2007, he served as a technical advisor with the SWAC. He spent 2006 as a replay communicator with the Atlantic Coast Conference.
His officiating experience includes bowl assignments with the Rose Bowl (1988), Orange Bowl (1992), Gator Bowl (1993 & 1996) and the SEC Championship Game (1992 & 1999).
Mitchell received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.
