Once the Mississippi Valley State spring football game concludes at Rice-Totten Stadium, the players will return to a much different look for their home opener.

Aside from a brand new state of the art scoreboard, the natural grass will be replaced by FieldTurf in time for the 2024 season, as reported by the Delta News.

“We’ll have the bulldozers out here on April 13th and they’ll start pulling up the grass once we get done with our spring game,” Delta Devils head coach Kendrick Wade told Robinson. “It’s one thing to talk about elevating and improving a program.

Now you have some visuals, you have some things that you can see to let you know that we are moving in the right direction.”

MVSU director of communications Donell Maxie told HBCU Sports that the funding for the FieldTurf came from the university itself.

Mississippi Valley State’s home opener is scheduled for Sat. Sept. 28 against Alcorn State. The Delta Devils will look to improve on a 1-10 record in Wade’s first season in which they were very competitive in most games.

“I took a poll and asked the team do we think we’re a great team, championship caliber, good team, average team or bad team? They said we’re an average team and I agree,” Wade said. “So the next step is how do we go from average to great?”
