Just one week removed from the HBCU band showcase in Greenville, S.C., the annual Queen City Battle of the Bands, held at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium on Saturday, provided us with another glimpse of what we can expect to see from HBCU marching bands this season.

From the event’s website:

“Webber Marketing created this community event to enhance the exposure of Historically Black Colleges & Universities marching bands and has donated over $160,000 in scholarship money to the participating schools in three years.”

The eight marching bands featured in this year’s exhibition were from Benedict College, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Talladega College, Tennessee State, Southern University and Winston-Salem State.

We’ve found video of each band performance. Take a look at each video below and then vote in our poll.

Benedict College

Bethune-Cookman

North Carolina A&T

North Carolina Central

Talladega College

Tennessee State

Southern University

Winston-Salem State

Time to choose. The poll will close at 11:59 p.m. Aug. 31.

Southern should NOT be in the running!! They are Legendary known…… I’m voting for NCCU, clean, organized, disciplined, sounds Great, and field show ready!!!

The best band performances should rank as such: No. 1 Southern No. 2 Tennessee State and No. 3 Bethune Cookman — in that order. Those kids worked hard and should be commended for their work. NCCU sounded good but they were not the best that night. Voting NCCU over the public’s obvious choice in the top three band performances that night raises concerns of credibility with this poll.

Southern is one of the most overrated bands there is. This bands lacks discipline, arrangements are on par with a high school bands, marching is sloppy, boring field shows (minus Dancing Dolls) and they lack basic musicianship. They lack the hallmarks that keeping them from ever being on the same level as FAMU or JSU
