Andre Johnson, the former Houston Texans wide receiver, has reportedly withdrawn his name for consideration for the Texas Southern job.
According to a report by Houston Chronicle columnist Jerome Solomon, Johnson told the school he was no longer interested in pursuing the job.
Solomon reported that Johnson indicated he “understands how important the history of HBCU and TSU football is, and he didn’t want to cause a divide between the voices in the program.”
It appeared that the school had identified former Alcorn State coach Fred McNair to fill the position, but reported dissension within the TSU Board of Regents has delayed naming a coach following three scheduled meetings.
At the center of the divide at one point were some board members wanting the school to consider Johnson — who had no coaching experience — for the job after he initially expressed interest in November.
Texas Southern has been without a coach since it announced that it would not renew the contract of then-head coach Clarence McKinney, who spent five seasons with the program.
The Texas Southern Board of Regents is scheduled to hold another meeting on Friday — its fourth since the end of the 2023 season — to vote on approving a contract for a head coach.
