Tarian Ayres (No.6) will miss the CIAA Championship Game for breaking an undisclosed team rule.

In the week leading up to the CIAA Championship game versus Winston-Salem State, Virginia State quarterback Tarian Ayres has been suspended.

According to reports, Ayres, who has thrown for 1,827 yards and 14 touchdowns, was banned from the team for a rules violation.

Late Tuesday it was reported he was arrested on a driving under the influence complaint.

“Our players understand our expectations and also the consequences for not abiding by these expectations,” head coach Latrell Scott said in a statement.

The statement continued, “Neither Scott nor the University will have further comment.”

Backup quarterback Niko Johnson completed two passes on just three attempts during limited time this season.

The 2013 title game was canceled after WSSU quarterback was reportedly attacked by then Virginia State running back Lamont Britt during the CIAA postseason awards banquet. He was later charged with simple assault.

The Trojans (8-2, 7-0 CIAA) will face Winston-Salem State (9-1, 7-0) on Saturday at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, N.C.
