MONTGOMERY—Alabama State will introduce new head baseball coach Mervyl Melendez today at 1 p.m. at the Houston Markham Football Complex at Hornet Stadium.
Melendez, who led Bethune-Cookman to 11 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) titles and 11 NCAA playoff appearances in his 12 seasons as head coach, was named head baseball coach Friday by Alabama State Athletic Director Stacy Danley.
Melendez brings a 379-320 record (.540) to Alabama State, including six straight winning seasons, and nine seasons of 30+ wins.
Melendez, 37, has compiled an impressive list of victories and accomplishments in his head coaching career. Highlighted among them are two separate streaks of at least five consecutive MEAC titles (2000-04, 2006-11). His teams have made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, and posted a victory vs. Florida International in 2002.
