Hopson going after Simmons!

It's only a matter of time now. We are witnessing a culture change in the SWAC sparked by Alcorn.
If Hopson goes in USM and does damage who do you think is next? These schools will look at who gave him competition and they will see Fobbs as the next choice. He will be good as gone. He will have too many offers.
 



if Simmons doesn't take this job as an OC he will be looking at another job but as a HC in either the Sunbelt or Conference USA, he is a FBS the way..
 
every time boise st hired a coach and got on a roll, another program came in and hired him away. did they say, "Next time lets hire a buster no one wants!" or "Lets find a guy that boise is his dream job?" No. they understand their place in the roll. They are a stepping stone and because they do it right they don't have a problem finding a good, new coach. Know your place in the world. We are the swac! we are not dream job u. don't believe me? offer any coach football or basketball 700 g's to coach at random p5 school and you'll have to dive to get out of the way of their car. that's ok though. be a good stepping stone and you'll keep your stroll on.

Until they hire an actual black coach as a HC on the fbs level. There is nothing here to be impressed by any further then coach Hopson getting another opportunity.

I said before and I'll say it again. Some of you act like coach Hopson was on their short list. When in reality he was on their "what we got left list"

you are exactly right, Alcorn has to take advantage of this, it's too great of an opportunity for us. We started this so lets eat from the plate we made.

as I said, it's only a matter of time and I believe Fobbs is next. You all can downplay what is going on all you want but it is what it is. Alcorn has changed the game.

Nope, I'm sorry, but I don't see it that way. We are witnessing more of the same. The culture ain't changed, yet. It is still the same. And we can thank Alcorn (since you want to give the school credit) for providing the proof necessary to make the argument. What Hopson did while at Alcorn, isn't something the SWAC (or HBCU as a whole) hasn't seen before. There are a ton of HBCU coaches (past and present) that have come in and turned a program around, but none of them have been offered positions at FBS programs.

So Alcorn changed the game by getting the FBS level to hire a white head coach? Hmm...Kind of like the New Orleans Saints getting Who Dat from Alcorn because they heard it at a game where Alcorn Played Grambling in the Super Dome that not one white person attended and they waited a decade later to use it.
 
You all can deny it and fight it. It's up to you. The game has changed, whether you like or not. It is what it is. Either adapt or get left behind.

One of those teams are going to look at what Hopson does if he's winning, and see who his competitor was in the SWAC. Fobbs and Simmions (if he doesn't leave now) will be gone. This is how the game goes.
 
ya'll are nuts. Of course he should take the job. Have ya'll NOT seen what the past USM Head coaches have gone on to do? Fedora to UNC, Monken to Tampa Bay, Chip Lindsay (old OC) now OC at Arizona State. It's all about progressing your career. I will never get mad at a dude for progressing his career. Ya'll need to be rooting for the dude to be successful, because that will shine the light back on the conference and help to dispel the "no coaching" myth.

I agree. The days of coaching for 50 years like Coach Rob are over....well were over. This is about money. As my cousin who is coached...you accept a coaching job knowing 2 things: 1. You will be fired or 2. You will leave for a better job.

Deny? Deny what? There is nothing to adapt to. History is the proof. And for the record, this is NOT an argument about whether or not Hopson deserved consideration. Of course he did. (Because some of you love to play the "they just hatin' argument when it doesn't even apply). All some, including myself, are saying is that there have been other SWAC/HBCU coaches who have done just as much - or even more - than Hopson and have not gotten the look. Hence, white privilege.

Why the hell do schools have to wait and see what Hopson does to determine if SWAC/HBCU coaches are worthy of getting jobs at the FBS level. What if Hopson screws it up? Tell me, what is the difference between Jay Hopson and someone like Rod Broadway or Brian Jenkins?

I agree Kenn. Plenty of coaches have come in and won. When Pete came to SWAC, he won and had SU ranked in former 1-AA polls and there was some interest. Had he been white, he would have been gone. Doug came in and won at Grambling and interviewed for FBS level jobs. Nothing new. Hopson being white helped him out of Alcorn. Wasn't like he went 3 years undefeated in what some would say "a more talented SWAC" in the 90s. And secondly, USM was left in a bad position when their coach left for the NFL late in the game.

What Alcorn changed was the hiring of a white head coach in the SWAC. But as far as getting other Head Coaches noticed by FBS level teams. This is nothing new. What would be game changing is getting a black SWAC coach hired by the FBS school as a head coach. We have had some leave to be hired as FBS assistants. Hell we have had former FBS head coaches come to the SWAC as a head coach. Dickerson and Cooper.

If you re-read that thread I agree that 'privilege' exist in this case but it doesn't change the facts of what has occurred. A SWAC coach has now become a FBS Head Coach. Alcorn has opened that door. Yes it's sad that it took 'a white guy' to show that the SWAC has very good coaches but this is how America works and a FBS still took that chance. People want to win more than being racist...this has also been proven. Black QBs are an example of this. It can and will happen from now on. The SWAC has burst their cherry of going from FCS to FBS as coaches.

The flood gates are open now.
