aiight...let me step in here and tell it how it is. you see, my braves are at the bottom of the crab barrel so I can be a little more objective. regarding SU, spivery is doing what he does. he has a system that is predicated on having big men and though he doesn't realize it...shooters. he has both this year at southern. with peter and jarrid in the paint, defforest, and alexander on the outside, su will click and is a good bet to win the conference and the tourney titles. the problem that spivery had at bama state is that he couldn't recruit the big men that he need for his system to work and for some reason he doesn't believe he needs shooters. his system forces the ball into the paint and they try to make it from there but the only teams he had at bama state had someone who could fill it up from the outside. already at su he's grabbed a 6'10 center from puerto rico that's playing now and a 6'8 225 lb forward that's redshirting b/c of a knee injury, so maybe he's fixed that problem.

jsu may have the best coach in the conferece. anderson can coach and recruit and they're starting to see the return on that hire. they will be tough this season. they just lack depth inside w/ freshman caldwell being the only real threat.

a&m proved their metal last year and they recruited well. this season is different though b/c they now play with a bullzeye on their back. they'll get everyones best effort ( see grambling 84 points). so....swac basketball has improved. there are more good coaches iin the conference than there have been in many years and as our schools facilities continue to improve, more media attention (see bama state @ aamu on feb 12 ESPN2) recruiting will improve and so will the product on the hardwood.
 Major you better tell them. But 6'7 Ralph Hishaw is good also playing he is everywhere on the court.

Didn't somebody get burned last year for making conference predictions after being #1 after 3 games? There are 15 games left, and PLENTY of room for a tumble off the pedestal.

We are just having a little fun. Our basketball program has been down for so long, we are just happy about the progress of our program.

Martin Again Leads the Way for AAMU; Bulldogs Beat Valley
A&M ices conference victory, moves to 3-1

Joe Martin scored 21 points in the MVSU win.

Jan. 9, 2006

Joe Martin again led his team to victory as Alabama A&M won its third straight Monday, 74-67, over Mississippi Valley State. The Bulldogs never trailed in the game with Martin tallying 21 points and eight rebounds. A&M forced 18 turnovers and outscored the Delta Devils 16-6 in points off the other's miscues.

Michael Ford and Evan Hilton were also in double figures for the Bulldogs, scoring 13 and 10, respectively. Marcus Jones hit 9-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. Mickell Gladness had five of the team's nine blocked shots. A&M is now 5-5 overall and 3-1 in the SWAC.

We TOO DAMN DEEP... Obbie had a bad game (only scored 8 points) and we still never trailed and defeated Valley.

Tks for the info...

Man I thought Obie scored way more than that. Those 8 points that Obie made were some game breakers for MVSU. Valley couldn't keep up with Obie. And Evan Hilton for Freshman of the Year.

Jaguars thump Jackson State
The surge midway through the first half impressed enough. Then again, the way Southern answered every Jackson State attempt to get back in the game also raised some eyebrows. Four players scored in double figures as Southern dominated on both ends in an 80-65 victory Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Southern had its best offensive performance of the season ? in terms of points, assists (17), field-goal percentage (57.1) and free-throw percentage (14-for-15, 93.3).

Southern's Monroe reaches milestone
Rolanda Monroe had forgotten her quest for the school’s career scoring record until she heard the public address announcer. She didn’t even know her mom, Melanie, had driven from Arcadia. She had no time, really, to celebrate or scan the stands. Not with Southern having so much trouble putting away Jackson State. Monroe finished with 15 points, needing to rediscover her shooting touch late, as SU held off Jackson State for a 61-55 Southwestern Athletic Conference victory Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

Jaguars hope to stay hot on road
Playing on campus has been good to the Southern men?s basketball team, good for a 16-point win over Louisiana Tech a month ago and back-to-back, 15-point conference wins Friday and Monday.

Southwestern Athletic Conference-leading Southern (5-9, 4-0 SWAC) returns to the road, where it has already played 10 games so far this season, this weekend. SU plays at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (4-7, 1-2) on Saturday night and at Mississippi Valley State (2-10, 2-1) on Monday night.

Jaguars seek to keep poise

Focus, focus, focus.

The defining element to Southern’s hot start in the Southwestern Athletic Conference has been its ability to be so poised — the seemingly contradictory combination of sustaining energy and playing under control.

Composure on the road, a factor missing for so many years, has been there. A full-game, answer-everything ability to dominate a game has surfaced as well.

“The maturity of the team is showing,” first-year SU coach Rob Spivery said. “It’s something we’ve really talked about, something we really spent time stressing. I see them growing. If we just continue the effort, we’re going to be fine.”

Before and after, Southern’s players will get a chance to hug and laugh with their popular former assistant coach, Danny Evans, the guy who recruited most of them.

But in the 40 minutes in between, SU coach Sandy Pugh wants the focus solely on the game as the Jaguars (7-6, 4-0) play at Arkansas-Pine Bluff (2-10, 1-2) at 5:30 p.m. today in the K.L. Johnson Complex.

“It won’t be any different,” said Pugh, who will face a former assistant-turned-head coach for the first time tonight. “It’ll be good to see coach. He’s done well. … After the game, the kids can go up and give him a hug. But before then, let’s handle our business.”

Southern, the conference’s preseason favorite and current leader, is on a four-game winning streak.

“I don’t think I’ll feel any different,” Southern senior guard Rolanda Monroe said.

“I’ll probably play harder because we don’t want them to beat us. … It might be a little emotional when we see him, but we won’t bring that on the court.”

SU men still perfect in SWAC

PINE BLUFF, Ark. ? Say this much about Southern. The Jaguars know how to survive on the road in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

SU saw a 19-point lead eight minutes into the second half chiseled to one point after going cold, but still hung on to win 60-58 over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday night at the K.L. Johnson Complex.

Southern got something out of all of its last six possessions, even if it was just one of two free throws and even if it was Jerrid Campbell?s offensive rebound to burn more clock on the only touch the Jaguars didn?t turn into points.

And the Jaguars (6-9, 5-0 SWAC), who have won their first five SWAC games since a 6-0 conference start in 1998-99, needed every point.

?It?s good for your team to win close games,? Southern coach Rob Spivery said. ?I didn?t want it that close, as it was. But since it was, I?d prefer us to win this kind of way, then to come in and win by 20 points, as it looked like we were about to do. I appreciate the guys maintaining their poise and not panicking in a situation like this.?

Peter Cipriano had 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Chris Alexander added 17 points and DeForrest-Riley Smith 11 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

UAPB (4-8, 1-3), which got 11 points apiece from Timothy Hamilton and Larry Williams, played without its leading scorer, Tamarius Brown. The senior guard who averages 13.7 points per game has been held out of the last two games while the school resolves an academic issue.

Southern looks to break jinx

Southern's Chris Alexander will try to help the Jaguars stay unbeaten in the SWAC.

If you’re going to have a real showdown, if you’re going to test your mettle, if you’re going to prove that this year may actually be different than the teases of the past and if Southern is the name on your jersey, you’d better show what you’ve got right here, in the place that’s been so unforgiving.

The Harrison HPER Complex on the campus of Mississippi Valley State doesn’t look so tough. A rectangular building that could be mistaken for any high school gym, the Jaguars play here on Mondays every year and usually take a long bus ride home with a loss.
Southern has won just twice in its last 14 visits here.

Southern women on roll

Rolanda Monroe (left) and the Southern women are 5-0 in the SWAC.

Twelve straight wins over an opponent may be cause enough to generate overconfidence. The only thing is, the last six have been decidedly closer than the first six.

And Mississippi Valley State, an up-and-comer under Nate Kilbert, has gotten the attention of the Southern women’s basketball team.

“Valley is definitely one of the top three teams in the conference,” SU coach Sandy Pugh said. “They’ve proven that. We have to bring our ‘A’ game. You have to bring your ‘A’ game if you’re going to play those guys now.”

Valley snaps SU’s winning streak
No matter how good this Southern men’s basketball team is, or will prove to be, or possibly even isn’t, there is at least one truth that still holds. It’s tough, and seemingly more impossible by the game, for this program to win at Mississippi Valley State’s Harrison HPER Complex.
