Mississippi Valley State announced that it is dropping a women’s sport while adding others.
The school on Friday indicated that women’s soccer will be discontinued while introducing women’s flag football and a club golf program.
The decision is effective immediately, the school said in a news release.
The move comes after the school decided to cancel the soccer season in September due to reported “health and safety concerns.”
All current women’s soccer players will retain their athletic scholarships through the 2025–26 academic year. The university will also provide personalized support for players who wish to continue their academic careers at MVSU or pursue transfer opportunities, the school said.

“This was a difficult but necessary decision, and we fully understand its impact on our student-athletes,” said Dr. Alecia Shields-Gadson, director of athletics. “This realignment reflects a strategic vision that allows us to reinvest in emerging sports and create more opportunities for students to compete and thrive.”
The university said that the new club golf program will also “provide a low-cost opportunity” for athlete participation.
“We are excited about the future of MVSU Athletics and the opportunities ahead,” Shields-Gadson said. “This realignment strengthens our program and helps us remain competitive within the SWAC and beyond, while maintaining our commitment to student success.”
