Virginia State University was on lockdown early Saturday morning following reports of multiple gunshot injuries and multiple shooters.
The Associated Press reports that the shootings occurred near the Quad Annexes. Multiple people were transported to local hospitals with gunshot wounds, but according to VSU officials, none of the injuries appear to be life-threatening.
The university said in a statement that the shooting involves “multiple suspects.” The statement asked people to avoid the immediate area.
“VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating,” the university statement said. “The campus community should continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions.”
The shooting comes the day after former NFL MVP Cam Newton was on hand for Virginia State’s pinning ceremony and days before classes are set to begin Monday morning.
Virginia State officials released a statement Saturday afternoon announcing lockdown has concluded after it was a determined that no immediate threat to the campus community.
The school’s statement also said that of the five gunshot victims, one has a been identified as a Virginia State student.
