SWAC OFFICE CAN LEARN VALAUBLE LESSONS FROM SU AND PV

naw, Panthro, I was out looking up the last time PV had a winning season in football. Once I got to the 70s and was still looking, I felt so sorry for PV, that I just stopped looking. :smh:
That's what took so long.

Think how many more of the average fans (read $$$) they would have gotten for the final SU/PV games alone had the games been centrally located. It is much more feasible for a Houstonian, Baton Rouge native, Beaumont, Houma, etc., to drive to NO, Shreveport, hell even Jackson (since the hood don't matter) than to drive ALL the way to B-Ham to see SU and PV play. Same would go for an AAMU-ASU game in Houston.
ummmm, sorry but tournaments don't work like that kid. You don't wait to see who's in the final, then set the location.

btw, yall act like the average attendance for SWAC baseball is sooooo great to begin with.

But seriously though, it's been stated in this thread as in many others before that the local community, even with it's own schools participating do not support our championship events. That in itself is a cause for concern. You can't divert your way around that this issue.

wrong,
see the attendance for the basketball tournament a couple of months ago. As for the SCG, ASU has brought more fans than any other school that has participated.

.

But that's just it, mh. They accuse the league of being short minided, then in turn, they want them to do exactly as you stated above. While it has been established that the Bama (and most folks didn't and don't) care where the tournament was held, they have done their damndest to make it an Alabama issue.

I go back to my original post on this subject:

Please, SWAC office hear our cry!! How much longer must we endure these shrill whines and cries about baseball attendance?

We beg of you, oh benevolent execs...be ye merciful and take this tournament to Houston where crowds will swell into the thousands, and the games will be played only in state-of-the-art facilities, thus bringing smiles to all the faces of those who now shed a trail of tears.

With one addendum:

And it matters not that you don't have the money to make this happen. If need be, rob, cheat or steal (well maybe not THAT) to secure these funds for this venture. Goodness knows our eardrums cannot take much more of the high-pitched tones of malcontentment that we've been subjected to. As a gesture of good faith, invite those who have such grave concern for this issue to sit at the table of brotherhood with you, and devise a plan that will satisfy them, thus making it satisfactory for ALL of us at the same time. This is your servant's request.

SWAC execs, hear the cries of your children as they humbly beg ye for peace and goodwill among all!

:goodbad:

Aww dayum....Just when I was giving MH some credit...:nono:

I know you don't wait. All I'm saying is that the possiblity is greater of the casual fan of WHATEVER sport making a trip to a centrally located tourney no matter WHO is playing than to drive halfway across the country.

Like Thames stated in the original post (which nobody still touched). If the SWAC got the stadium for free, then why could the seats not be cleaned? Why were there not game programs/rosters? Why was there little promotion to at least ATTEMPT to draw some fans out to make some money?

LMAO@Alum
:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Dear SWAC,
It's Houston or Bust. Dammitt!!!!:mad:

:emlaugh::emlaugh::emlaugh:

btw s phi s,
Are you saying that the SWAC baseball tournament will attract thousands if it was "centrally located"?

Simple answer. They didn't pay for anything! How hard for you is that to understand?

If you don't pay for advertisement what do you expect?

It's a difference between having the largest attendence for a championship game and just exceeding the average. Example, if the largest attendance prior was 4,000 and you had 5,000 in a 18,000 seat venue. That's not impressive.

MH, that is not what I'm saying. It is already understood that baseball is not king in the SWAC. But that doesn't mean you should automatically write it off as a loss. B-Ham isn't exactly an ideal spot for the SCG in football, but they put some resources into it, and at least get SOMETHING out of it. With a tourney that starts on Thursday and ends on Sunday, more people would be inclined to travel a shorter distance on the weekend just to support the SWAC, if nothing else.

Mike....That's my point. Paper ain't THAT dayum expensive, and neither is soap and water.

It's impressive when you look at the average attendance of the conference.

To draw 5K to your championship game when the avg attendance in the conference is less than 1500 is nothing to sneeze at.

Mike I hope I'm not reading you wrong, so here goes.

Since the stadium is free, it shouldn't have to be clean? and the SWAC is so broke that they can't pay to advertise an event, but yet still hold it, hoping someone would show up??????

I know the schools have to do their share of getting word out, but to hold a tournament, and not advertise why even hold it. Piggybacking off of s phi s, and northern tiger, how do you expect to generate any kind of money if nothing is spent?

Again, I hope I didn't read you wrong, but everything can't be free, and if the SWAC is in such bad shape, that gameday programs can't be published for sales purposes, then what's the sense in having a tournament in the first place?

This is not a Alabama issue, but a SWAC issue, so Bamian's don't jump on me.

NICE

Do you actually believe there is such an audience for SWAC baseball to the extent that people will "be inclined to travel" to watch it?

btw, there must be a horrible, horrible mistake with the attendance that was reported in the SWAC baseball tournament, last year in Houston. Mind you, hometownTexas Southern was in the final.
The reported attendance for the championship game is 483. Four Hundred Eighty Three!!!!!!!!!! :scared:
Is that right?

How many black people reside in Birmingham? The The two teams that played were from AL. and all you could get was 5,000 people. That's chump change. Denial and diversion is your motto.

DAYUM....If you would have READ, I even stated that Houston was in the same boat as B-Ham, and NOT the most ideal place for the tourney. Why can't you all discuss the issue without making it a Texas vs. Alabama thing?

And SWAC baseball may not have the following of other sports, but I know of MORE than a few people that missed out on going because of the distance.

Not to answer for Mike, because I'm sure he can speak for himself, but I will answer.

No one is advocating that the facility for any SWAC event not be clean and presentable. That responsibility lies on the staff of the facility. Certainly if they were allowing for it to be used (free or not) they know that it needs to be clean.

I don't know if the issue of gameday programs not being printed is one of money or not. I would think that this would be a relatively inexpensive task to undertake, so certainly the SWAC should take responsibility for that. If its been done before, then why it wasn't done in 2005 is a question for the SWAC office to answer for you.

As has been stated (and as is common knowledge) baseball IS NOT considered a marquee sport (much to the chagrin of some, I'm sure,) but nevertheless FACT. That being said, with the financial situation the league office finds itself it, they may not have thought it feasable to put alot of money into publicity and other marketing tools. That too, is an issue to take up with the executive offices.

What I've taken issue with more than anything is this insistance by some that the baseball tournament has raked in huge numbers in the past in locales other than Birmingham, when I know that's a MAJOR fabrication!

Perhaps we need to (once again) consider Mighty Dog's suggestion...each member school increase its supplement to the league to $25,000. That way, we can establish some "seed monies" for those sports that don't have the following of some others. But to continue to beat a dead horse (that being the league's current financial status) is really quite ridiculous. People have said money has got to be spent to be made..and that's correct. HOWEVER, perhaps the money that will have to be spent, will have to be spent by the league's member institutions. Now, how many are willing to do THAT?

oh, now that the beans have been spilled about the attendance in Houston last year, it's a different song......
:snicker:

nt,
In your mind, what should the attendance have been? And as I posted, keep in mind that the attendance was 3 times the regular season attendance and the game was held on a Sunday morning.

mh,

Don't you know that the Alabama schools will be held to a different litmus test. See, when the tournament is in Birmingham, we should be expected to bring every person with a blackface out to the games. However, when it's in Houston (the 4th largest city in the nation, with a whole lot more dayumed black folks than Bham) 483 will suffice. That's basically what NT is telling us.

Clean your glasses. This ain't TBF. I DARE you to sift through all the BS in this thread and find me ONE post where I advocated having the tourney in Houston. I KNOW I have said SEVERAL times that this isn't a Houston issue, and I am against Houston as much as I am Birmingham because they are in the same boat (the endpoints of the SWAC).

Until you get an answer for the question above, all that other is moot. That's what I AND MANY OTHERS have been saying all along!

I don't dispute you on that AAMU Alum. But everyone is turning this into Bama vs Texas when that ain't the case (at least not on my end)

Understandable Alum, but even for an event such as baseball where revenues pale in comparison to other sports, some revenue should at least be attempted to be made, if not the event might as well not be played.

Tournaments are designed to make money, and if you're not trying to do that, then you're wasting money, by having schools and paying their expenses.

Baseball wasn't anything in the SEC until the schools saw another avenue to make some money. HBCU'ers are getting drafted in good numbers, so why not push the event. As much as baseball is frowned upon by HBCU fans, there are more HBCU'ers drafted in baseball, than any other professional sport combined.

NICE
