Honestly, do you think the SWAC championship game this year, was a well-played ballgame between two defensive monsters?
SWAC Football better? Hell NO. If the schools that have been carrying this conference(Southern, Grambling & Jackson) aren't at full strength and i mean full strength how can the SWAC be improved? When these 3 are on it, that makes the conference look good and strong. Many may get angry over it but that's the truth.
What makes the SWAC looks good is when the bottom of the conference is just as competitive as the top of the league. You can't tout conference strength when just the same three schools are dominating and everyone else is average to mediocre.
But to the question. I think the only way to determine that is to evaluate how well SWAC schools compete outside the conference against FCS foes or during FBS match ups. Examining that will lead to finding your answer.
For one there isn't stability in the conference as a whole. Coaches don't stay long enough to really build their teams. Many coaches does the quick fix thing and after that runs out they are ghost. It's like domino's in the SWAC and other conferences also but i think the conference as a whole needs some stability to get stronger.

You can blame it on youtube or whatever you want. There was a significant drop off in talent from 2000 on forward
:lmao: When you think you have heard it all...... :lmao:
TSU/BAMA, that was the comment of a.... No sensible logic whatsoever. :smh:

Coaches don't stay in one place anywhere anymore so we can't use that excuse either.
As Jag94 so eloquently pointed out I beleieve the SWAC needs to focus more on discipline.. IN ALL MAJOR SPORTS.. this is a huge problem in hoops as well.
As far as OOC wins is concerned, I attribute these perrils to:
1. Poor Scheduling (For example people think a matchup w/ a D2 or lower is a good game to book, not realizing that the more "liberal" eligibility requirements allow team to sometimes stack-up on transfers & our guys run into a buzz saw). More scouting of talent/ rank should be done to help prevent this.
2. Discipline, as I mentioned before. (Some of these lesser talented teams we play are WAAY more disciplined than us, and tend to sometimes show up and pop us square in the mouth.)
Bruh, I started in the Southland, discipline is the greatest thing seperating our conference from theirs... well that and $$
As far as NFL prospectus... underexposure quite simply put is the biggest culprit here.
I think the recent parity in the SWAC has been a good thing for our conference, eventhough alot who have been on top for so long won't agree. (Let's take the Big XII for example, outside the downfall of Texas, they have a lot of teams have turned sum heads this season in a conference that has always been criticized of being too top heavy.) Alot of new teams cracked the top 25 or beat top 25 schools.
Overall I feel a little of both.. I wouldn't outrighly say worse though...
Someone tell me how has SWAC football gotten better? Compared to what?
Middle School.
Since 2004, every SWAC champion we had has been suspect. That 2003 Southern squad was the last time the SWAC came close to producing a complete team.
What about the 2005 Bruce Eugene led Offense and Jason Hatcher led defense!
That defense sucked and the only thing you had on offense was Bruce but until you faced SU, that was enough.
Yeah, when is the last time the SWAC had a first round draft pick?
When I see WRs sustaining blocks downfield...
When I see OL getting to the 2nd and even 3rd level downfield blocking...
When I see RBs sustaining blocks...
When I see OL that don't have that fat assed belly hanging over their britches...
When I see OL firing OFF the ball...
When I see QBs making some pretty damned good throws...
When I see QBs audibiling @ the LOS....
When I see multiple sets by offenses (one minute it's the spread and then can line up in an I-formation if not pro-set)...
When I see hella' catches by WRs and hardly no dropped balls or fumbles....
When I see TEs blocking well @ the point of attack....
When I see TEs blocking downfield....
When I see TEs catching what's thrown to them...
When I see discipline by offense (collectively)...
When I see offensive coaches making the right calls @ the right time...
When I see special teams play (particularly extra points) being made as a HABIT...
When I see special teams play (punters) that understand field position...
When I see special teams play (kickers/FGs) being made @ a pretty good clip...
...
...
I could comment on defenses as well.
Yes, from top to bottom, the SWAC has done well. I haven't looked it yet but what was the SWAC's OOC record this fall? Where's Terror? He'll know it.
this is what I would use to judge, are we getting kids to the next level.
