Dude, did you play baseball? No hbcu in th COUNTRY has enough pitching depth to make a run at Omaha. That's the deciding factor. PERIOD. :slap:

nope! playing organized baseball never crossed my mind. what I'm saying though is that I get no satisfaction out of being hbcu champs in anything. alcorn does aiight but we all know southern is the big dog in baseball. I just want them to go out and do the thing. we ought to be able to be the champs in something. bridge. bingo. something. pwc don't own everything. on that note famu's womens volleyball team did crack the top 25 last season and advanced in the ncaa tourney last year not this year. of course the whole team is from the chek republic or somewhere like that, but that's fine with me if they can hold the trophy at the end.

Southern third baseman Kevin Cox makes the catch for an out in the second inning of the
second game of a doubleheader Saturday against Southern Arkansas. Shortstop Brandon Revis backs up Cox on the play.

Southern coach Roger Cador was eager to see how his team would respond in its season opener Saturday.

Cador saw both good and bad as the Jaguars split a doubleheader with Southern Arkansas, losing the first game 13-4 and winning the nightcap 5-1 at a chilly Lee-Hines Field.

The Jaguars (1-1) used a five-run fifth inning in the second game to salvage the split after finding the going rough in the first game.

“Obviously the first game we didn’t go very well,” Cador said. “I sort of expected that because we did what we’ve been doing in practice and we hadn’t been doing it in practice. We hadn’t been executing and Southern Arkansas took advantage of it.”

After allowing seven hits and 11 walks in the first game to the Muleriders, the Jaguars got a strong performance from Christopher Donaby in the second game.

Donaby pitched the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits and getting five strikeouts as he kept the Jaguars in striking distance.

“We came back and got a great performance from Chris Donaby,” Cador said. “He threw the ball well and kept the game intact. He gave us a chance and bought us some time where we could finally get our bats rolling.”

Gene Filyaw Jr. led off the Jaguars fifth with a double to left field. He was sacrificed to third by Kevin Cox.
