You can learn from those teams by playing them in the regular season, so what's the difference? After all these years in the playoffs, the MEAC still struggles just about every year, yet I still see no vast improvement in talent or play on the field.

Pough goes undefeated in the MEAC year in and year out, but where are the victories to show that being in the playoffs is actually benefitting the MEAC?

Nothing succeeds like success. MOST teams in FCS lose in the Playoffs, but that does'nt mean they should stop trying. Real competition makes you better and increases your chances of success. Much like in playing the Lottery. If you buy a ticket but don't win the jackpot, do you quit playing Lottery?

If that is the case, why not schedule other FCS teams (GA Southern, Richmond, Montana, App State, Delaware, etc.) during the regular season instead of playing these OOC HBCUs and FBS teams? Those aren't your real competition. Playing those other FCS teams will only prepare you for the playoffs.

Scheduling has been a big problem for us. We have contracts with Ala St and SU that we haven't been able to fulfill because of scheduling problem. Now that the MEAC is going with a seven game mandate, hopefully we will be able to have a more competitive schedule. We will play the third of five games w/SU in Atlanta this year. We've played only one of the five games with ALA St.

Presently we have slots for four OOC games. We could play SU in the ATL, finish the contract w/Ala St (thereby freeing up another slot), schedule a FBS payday, and schedule OOC games with Tenn St, GA Southern, GA State, Jacksonville St, and other school from the Big South, Southern, and South division of the Colonial Athletic Assoc.

With our new AD, I can see this happening because of some of the games other MEAC teams have been able to schedule.

So if you guys are under contract with Southern and Alabama State and have scheduling conflicts with the MEAC, why are you guys able to find room to play FBS schools every year?

The FBS games are scheduled years out with the availiable dates. Last year we finished our contract w/Miami. This year we play Univ So Fla. I don't know if this is a multi=game contract or not, but I remember it was signed about five years ago. The one really important FBS game we got knocked out of because of scheduling was Univ of GA. They offered about $800K!

But with the change in the amount of conference games we have to play, more funds from booster groups, and the addition of the new AD, I feel that we will be on solid footing within the next few years.

Its all good, as long as you guys honor those contracts with Alabama State and Southern the way yall have done those FBS schools.

With the new mandate, I think we will be able to fulfill those contracts rather quickly, of course depending on their scheduling ability.

1. Who does FAMU play for Labor Day next year?

2. If Southern becomes the permanent team in the AFC, how will that affect their home-and-home contract with yall?

Ok Help me out on this. I've seen topic after topic about this and I really don't see the fuss! The conference made it a rule that no teams in the SWAC can go to the playoffs?

There is no rule that says conference teams can't go to the playoffs. The rule is teams that win their division has to go to the SCG. A few years ago the NCAA requested information on Prairie View to see if they would be eligible for the playoffs. The Swac said no because there was a chance that there would be a 3 way tie for the West and the winner of that tie would have to go to te SCG. The determination of a 3 way tie was based on the winner of the Bayou Classic that year and that was the same weekend that the playoffs started. So the Swac said PV was not eligible and the NCAA took that information and did'nt use them for a outside chance of getting a at-large birth. So any Swac team that is not playing that first weekend and is not or has no possiblity of making the SCG is really eligible for the playoffs.

The MEAC doesn't have a nine-game mandate, they can add who they may choose.

They did have a 9 game mandate before they expanded, that's why FAMU couldn't play SU and finish their contract games because they didn't have the open dates.

Fiya,

If there is a 9-game mandate, why do we even have a SCG? That's almost as dumb as giving your only bid to the NCAA Tournament to anyone who win our 4-day conference tournament.

The answer to both of these questions is there is money to be made, plain and simple.

Football and basketball are 2 different animals....

But in football with the 9 game mandate I agree. There should have been a 8 game conference schedule if you were going to keep the SCG. Although you could still have the same teams play a 2nd game it wouldn't like everyone played everybody and then you want to play a championship game.

I don't agree with your logic about the basketball tournament, remember it's a TOURNAMENT.

The NCAA basketball championship event is a TOURNAMENT.

...which has real weight. Our conference tournament has no real weight. Send the conference champion (the team who "championed" the conference) to the NCAA Tournament; not anyone who lucks up and wins a 4-day event.

MEAC folks have been making this their main argument for playing in the playoffs, yet from top to bottom, I don't see one team improving in their play. BC did last year, but that was only one year. They still got blowed out in the playoffs.

If you guys were serious about real FCS competition, you'd be playing the likes of Wofford, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, Western Carolina, Appalachian State, etc. Instead, most of the MEAC schools play D-2 schools like Virginia State. That tells me you all could care less about competition.

Jayrob:

We are getting over $1 million for two OOC games straight up. Why would we give that up to play teams in the regular season we can play in the postseason. Say we give up one of our games and lose possibly $400,000 and the LB is promising less than $25,000 per participant. Or we can keep the $500,000 and play in the FCS and either break even or make a small amount of money (less than $50,000 at most maybe if we host multiple games). You tell me which optimizes both our competitive and financial opportunities.

And why would Grambing and Southern move the Bayou Classic off of NBC Thanksgiving weekend for a million dollars apiece to play in the FCS Playoffs for $30,000, that will barley cover their expenses?

You shouldn't. I have stated on this board and the other MANY times I appreciate what you guys have and I would not rush to give it up. Especially in a time of pressured enrollment and state support. I understand that moving the game to another weekend may not lend to a deal with NBC do to rivalry week games.

So, in other words, FAMU does not care as much about scheduling FCS competition as they do about playing "money games".

It is called the MEAC expanded and limited our OOC games. With the few we have we are trying to maximize revenue and play the teams our fans want. The 9 game mandate in the SWAC initially hurt us playing teams in the SWAC and MEAC expansion finished it off. We have contracts with SU and ASU that are incomplete due to MEAC expansion.

So FAMU fans don't want to see FAMU play those FCS schools?
