Well my nephew attends Huntington High School in Shreveport and he told me that most of those players are interested in Grambling to stay close to home. Now the question: Is Grambling pursuing them?

Two of Aug's three in-state losses came from two schools in class 4A, one by 11 pts. and other by 9 pts. Aug lost to 5A Rummel by one point.

I'll be impress if St. Aug. can go undefeated while playing in class 4A. Peabody has done it twice in recent years, with both years being 41-0 records.

We'll have to see about that. St. Aug has a long history of basketball accomplishments in this state and that would be another impressive feat to add.

I've seen that emotionally heartfelt overdramatized movie. But when was the last time st aug basketball team was nationally ranked in the top 10? Like I said before, the only way st aug would impress me is by going undefeated in Class 4A.

Back in the 90's a few times when Euguene Edgerson played and when Hollis Price was there.
Looking at this district line-up, none of these schools with the excception of maybe peabody has a leg to stand on when comparing them to a school out of the Catholic League. Brother Martin won back to back titles when D.J played there, so it's very possible for the Aug to win the 4A title. Football season will be very interesting this Fall.

When Pineville was in the district, they've won 2 state basketball titles and Leesville have won 1 state basketball title. Each time that Pineville or Leesville have won a state title, Peabody has either won the state title the year before them or the year after them. Alexandria Senior High is currently not a team to overlook.

That may be the case, but you know as well as I know that winning state championships isn't anything new to St.Aug.

State titles are nothing new to Peabody. But since you brought it up, I was just letting you know that there are other teams in District 3 that have won titles. Aug moving from 5A to 4A is like the top SWAC school moving to the SEC. LOL!!!!

You think 4A is really that tough? Dude before they changed the classification rules, you do know schools like Aug, Curtis, Evangel and West Monroe were all in 5A. peabody wouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with schools such and your success has occurred most recently. We talking about a school that has given the NFL and NBA some of it's biggest names. The Aug been winning championships in football and basketball since the 50's. At any rate, we look forward to playing yall in the near future.

What happened in the 50's is nice, but now is what is most important. With that said, here are the top 10 teams in the state according to Maxprep, notice that 5 out of the top 7 are 4a schools.
For St. Aug to win 5A, they only had to beat the 8th rated team in the state.
Lets go a little further, out of the top 24 teams in the state, over half, 14 are 4A and only 6 are 5A (2 3A and 2 2A )
Irregardless of who sends someone to the pro's or what happened in the 50's, right now most of the best teams are in 4A, and for Bossier to win 4A, they had to beat the 7th, 6th, 5th and 4th rated teams in the state.
(SN: All 14 4A schools are public schools, 3 of the 6 5A schools are private and both 2a schools are private)

Please call or email Coach Washington! I've been up in Shreveport a lot lately with my son, and I had failed to remember just how much those fans up there love Grambling. We might need to even play a home basketball game there prior to conference play.

Lewis, it's funny how folks like to start talking about others sports and past championships when they realize that their school basketball program might not be as great as they think it is. Peabody's football and basketball programs are like night and day. Even though Peabody's football is not as successful as its basketball program, there are and has been great players that came from there, such as the Arceneaux kid that played for Alcorn who just signed with the Vikings. I believe the last time St. Aug won a state football title was back in the 80's when Otis Washington coached there and this year is the first time their basketball team won the 5A title since 2000, which Peabody won 4A title the same year. After the year 2000, Peabody has won 3 more 4A titles (2004, 2007, 2010) after 2000. What A3 fails to realize is that Peabody's basketball program just didn't become dominating just by accident. Coach Smith requires that all his players are high achievers. And even when Coach Smith was an assistant, Coach Bonial required the same things from his player. It is of my opinion that 4A became the toughest Class in the state due to Peabody's impact. By consistently making the top 24 year after year, Peabody raised the bar in Class 4A.

Everything you said was correct, however my only point is that now, in 2010 (and you will see the same the past 5 years), 4A is much harder than even 5A althought 5A is the classification for the largest schools, and it is not even close. It is not just Peabody, but other schools that have held the bar higher in 4A like Glen Oaks, Bossier City, Salman, Northside, Washington-Marion. All Public Schools with a rich tradion of Basketball excellence and almost all of the these school are historically Black and are not going anywhere anytime soon. It is one thing to beat up on schools that have a good team every few years, but don't really have a tradition, but it is another for schools that do this every year, a school that everyone on thier side of the score table is black, there is a level of pride that doesn't exist everywhere.
SN: When I was at Peabody, Coach Bowman was the coach. Coach Smith was his assistant. The whole basketball team was in advanced math, if you didn't have your homework, you didn't practice that day. Coach had a long paddle with some holes drilled in it. Make a bad grade in a class, you had a conversation with that paddle. You didn't go home and tell, cause you would just get it again. I only had to talk to that paddle 1 time. I was good after that. In my 4 years at Peabody, we lost a total of 9 basketball games.

Your are absolutely right Lewis and I stand corrected, it's Coach Bowman not Bonial. I should have known that since he was still the coach when I was there (79 - 83). I can remember when Coach Smith kept a paddle with him at all times in case a student decided to act up.
Even though the schools you listed are amongst the top basketball teams in Class 4A year after year, it seems to me Peabody has done it longer than any of them, which goes back as far as the mid 70's. It definitely would be nice to see the same level of commitment from Peabody's football program, but there are members of the football team that do stands above the rest. Peabody most likely will have one of the State's top running back prospects (Jalen Richard) this upcoming season. LSU is recruiting him hard.
