To further support your point, think back to the 2009-2010 Sugar Bowl that had SEC runner-up Florida (12-1) vs. Big East Champ Cincinnati(12-0). Cincinnati was very close to playing in the BCS National Championship game against Alabama due to Texas' near loss to Nebraska in the Big 12 title game. Florida embarrassed them in New Orleans and showed that the Big East had no business playing in any BCS game. If they didn't call off the dogs, Florida could have hung 100 on them.
Of course, in that same game a year earlier, Alabama was thoroughly outclassed by Utah. I agree that who you play matters to some extent, but your schedule doesn't prove who can beat whom.
