TIgers searching for big fish - JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

GR was joking (I hope)

I don't agree with playing these 1-A teams but if they make ya'll hard....oh well. I would rather just bring Delta State or Albany State to Jackson. If not that, we have room for a home-home with a 1-AA opponent since we can play 12 games next year.

You didn't read my post and take it in.
Let me clear up what I was saying.

I said IF WE PLAY A FBS, I would rather play one close to home. If not an in-state game like USM or Mississippi State simply because of in-state fan interest, then we should stick to teams like Ull, Lou Tech, lou-Monroe, Troy, or UAB. I forgot about Memphis. I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF TRAVELING ALL THE WAY TO OREGON TO GET THE HELL BEAT OUT OF US AT OREGON STATE IN FRONT OF 80,000 BEAVER FANS. WHATS THE POINT?

I have no interest in seeing JSU get games playing a team like Florida, Bamma, or Auburn for example, just to get skull drug in the name of "we played them." Playing Mississippi State and USM is getting scary these days.

A team like ULL or TROY is a "winnable" game if our teams are good and play a good game. Location wise they, along with the other teams I listed, they are close, our fans can travel to the game, and the cost is no more than a regular SWAC trip and we still get a check. Our teams have problems beating middle of the pack D2 teams. Why in the hell should we schedule the true powerhouses of the NCAA world for a damm check and a busted skull.

Like you, I would rather bring in UNA, Delta State, Tuskeege, or any GSC team on the D2 level and on the FCS level FAMU, or one of the Louisana FCS teams for a opening date with the FCS teams getting a home and home contract. Damm traveling all across the continent to get our skulls caved in when we got 20 schools on our level or just above our level withing a 400 mile radius.

Forgot about Memphis............WHY HAVN'T WE TRIED TO PLAY THEM?
Now somebody is thinking cause Memphis University people at the SHC in droves.

I wonder why we havent played Memphis as well lol... makes sense for yall as well... although I wouldnt do the back to back thing...

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

1AA (fcs) can not play 12 games in 2011.
You sure??? Why not??

I remember them voting against allowing 12 games on a yearly basis, but I don't recall not allowing a 12th game in those few years already designated.

LOL..Im already calling the 2011 season this year. I meant year after next. We already have 11 games for 2012. I was just saying we could add another with a home-home contract begining in 2011.

Thanks for the clarification. :D

Right, there is no need in playing USM or MS State. Also, Troy and those Sunbelt schools won't give us enough money to make it worth our while.

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

I'm have no interest in playing Delta State. We can get the same crowd playing Belhaven. And we all know strength of schedule has no bearing whatsoever in the SWAC. If we can't get a FAMU in here, let's either play the team that gives us the easiest home win or let's find a FCS money game.

Totally disagree but let's just hope Braddy makes a wise decision. I fear that Comegy may be thinking like you (but i am sure you meant FBS money game...stick with 1-A and 1-AA like I do. ). Thing is, if we play Spelman and win, you will be the first one saying we don't have any quality wins. Our attendance grew as the year progressed. Delta State might draw a better crowd this time and they should be a home win. Delta State was our best win of the season last year and if we go 12-0 this year, they would be the best win again. It's better to draw 13K for Delta State than to draw 13K for (i.e.)Northwestern State and then have to travel to them next year (2012). I think it's wise to schedule a "money game beating" on years that 12 games are allowed but I don't see the sense in scheduling one this year. We also don't need to "gimme wins" from a sorry team or "forgivable losses" from 1-A teams in the final year of Comegy's contract. This should be the best team he has assembled since he has been a JSU and we need a fair way to look at this season.

All we play for is the SWAC crown. Yes Delta was our best win last year but only because we lost the games that mattered. I would've gladly traded that Delta State win for a Bama State win. By the end of the season, beating DSU matter less than beating Valley.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't make sense to play a D-2 team that can beat you unless there's some good money involved. Delta State doesn't bring a crowd - simple as that. If it's going to be 97% JSU fans anyway, might as well play Belhaven.

As for not needing a money game, next year we need a game to replace the revenue we lose from the SU game. It makes sense to play an FBS opponent if you can get a nice guaranteed payout. What I'd like to see are some hard numbers. How much do we clear playing a home game with about 10K in paid attendance vs. what we clear playing an FBS school? Surely Braddy has those numbers and can decide accordingly. When scheduling that extra game, that should be the main consideration.

And since the first time we played them, we have got between 12 to 14 thousand at those games. We got SWAC teams that don't draw that many people so what is your point about "the crowd" for the first game. :noidea:

In other words if we good enough to beat up on each other, we should stay with the same old stale SWAC mindset of the past 20 years. Either play a crap team that give you no guage on how good our team is or play a skull drag game for a check.

Not worth our while for a 3 hour bus ride?

How much money would we get from a FAMU if we traveled all the way down there? Unless it is a home game for JSU in Memorial, we ain't getting shat for a FAMU game in Florida. I know the TROYs of the world don't have deep pockets but if they pay us $125,000 for a bus ride to Alabama, it is more than worth our while. I would rather take that than $360,000 to go all the way to Central Michigan, (for example), and then have to pay expenses out of that money like they were trying to get us to do 2 years ago.

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

I think we have different interests and ideas on who we consider to be a "good" opponent. Delta, good as they are, is still a D-2 school. They still offer about 2/3 the number of scholarships we offer. They're still a team that we should beat 10 times out of 10. I don't think that game is a good barometer because it hasn't been in the past. In 2007 they beat us and we won the SWAC. Last year we beat them and couldn't win the East. So in both years that game meant nothing. But my main problem with DSU isn't so much who they are but what they don't bring - a crowd. Both years they had maybe 500 fans show up. And we have to pay them for the privilege of showing up with a handful of fans and possibly beating our butts. No thank you. I'd rather get a similar amount of fans and an easy win. Your point about SWAC schools drawing the same or less isn't valid because we're forced to play them. believe me there's about 3-4 SWAC schools I'd take off the schedule if I could because they don't draw worth a damn.

Bottom line: We don't need a "test" game to see how good we are. We need is an easy home win or a money game. The money game could be a home and home with a FAMU, a classic or and FBS game.

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

I'm not for paying Delta State $15-20K for a game that draws all of 12K fans when we can probably get the same crowd cheaper against a Belhaven.

I hear you but............
How many people did Bamma State, Valley, Texas Southern and Pine Bluff bring to Jackson in 2009? I'm still trying to see your point about the crowd size when we have just as many people at a Delta State home game as we do for those 4 SWAC games in Memorial? :noidea:

So on to the easy home win game. Guess we need to call Savannah State or Corcedia. Who want to see those teams cause FAMU, Hampton, SCSU, BCC or any other FCS team you name is not going to be a "easy" home win. Forget calling Tuskeege because they are the same as Delta State and according to you, ........ a waste of time and no easy 1st game win. Also, we would have to pay Tuskeege for the privilidge of bringing 700 fans to Jackson just like Delta state. :smh:

You admitting that you scared of Delta State whipping our butts is telling about the mindset in this conference. You don't want a D2 whipping your butt, then start expecting and demanding more from your coaching staff and players outside of beating up on a mediocre SWAC schedule. Thats why our teams have dropped off over the last 2 decades. This is why TALENT go to other schools and not the SWAC like they used too. Playing crap teams for OOC games and then being happy beating conference teams that would struggle with D2 teams. Very sad state we in if that is the mindset we have fallen too.

So you want an easy win over a D3 school now.
Tell me why should we be FCS with this thinking? :smh:

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

1. Supposedly, Tuskegee is excited enough to bring a lot of fans to JSU. That's what I've been hearing for years. If that is the case, then bring them on - a bigger crowd means more money. But if they don't do any better than Delta State then the heck with them too. There's a big difference between TU and Delta btw. Delta St would beat them by 3 TDs if they played.

2. Delta State to me is a no-fer - no crowd and no easy victory. In the games you control out of conference, you try to at least get one of the 2. if the DSU game averaged 20K or more, I'd say play them every year. If they brought 4-6K fans with them, I'd be all for it. But they dont so they can kick rocks as far as I'm concerned.

3. You point about SWAC schools not bringing any fans isn't valid because we're forced to play them. Because of the 9 game madate, we can't control having Bama State and the rest of those guys coming to our campus, bringing 50 fans. But we can control our out of conference games. In fact, it is because of the 9 game mandate that we should look at out of conference games from a financial standpoint. Revenue has to be the first thing we take into consideration. And if we can't land a big money game and must schedule some lower school to fill out our schedule, there's easier and cheaper out there than DSU.

4. I didn't think much of DSU in 2007 and I didn't think much of them last year - even after they almost won the championship. My opinion of D-2 schools is way, way down thanks to our current coach. So I'm not afraid of them any more than I am of TxSou, Bama or any of the other teams we've lost to in recent years. And I certainly wouldn't treat a hom win over DSU as a monumental achievement. We kicked their butt this year because that's what we were supposed to do.

Actually they're NAIA. And don't act like we haven't played NAIA schools in the past.

As for being part of the FCS, we're FCS in name only. In reality we're in the SWAC/HBCU division. We have minimal contact with non-HBCU FCS schools.

The next years for a 12-game schedule for FCS schools if the current rules are maintained - 2013, 2014 and 2019.

Like I said.
That is why the SWAC got lazy and teams fell off playing all those "easy win" Corncedia, Central State, and Lincoln type schools in the 1990s to present date. We got minimum contracts with non-HBCU FCS schools because we don't even ask them for games anymore and when we do, people complain like we just caught a case of the plague or something. I went through the entire 1980's and the first part of the 1990's watching JSU playing and beating all the Louisana FCS schools on a yearly basis. We even had SFA on the schedule for 4 years. The mid-1990's bought an end to all that and here we are. Scared to play D2 schools. :smh:

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

We had a home and home with NWSt as recently as 2004. Grambling plays some Louisiana schools even now. What happened was expansion and the 9 game mandate. Whereas we used to have 3-4 non-conference games to play with, now there's 2. In our case there's one because TnSt in Memphis is set in stone. The question is what do you wish to accomplish in that one game per year? Me? I want to make some money, get an easy win or both.

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

And for the last time, no one is "scared" to play D-2 schools. I just don't see any upside to playing Delta State. They weren't even in the top 3 of the teams we played last year.

Delta State is not supposed to be in the top 3 schools we play since we play a 10 game FCS schedule.

So what would be the "upside" to playing and PAYING Tuskeege for only about 300 more fans than Delta State would bring? :noidea:

What would be the "upside" to playing a easy as heck, walk-over game against a team like hapless zero and forever Savannah State? :noidea:

Re: JSU seeks FBS Opponent for 2011 or FAMU

Well, this is the way I feel. I don't like wasted weeks on the schedule. Playing a Paul Quinn or Stilman is just as big of a waste as GaTech wasting a week to play SCState. Delta State is a "decent" opponent and that is all I ask to play. And for the record, TU fans ain't asking for a game vs JSU. Those fans don't care about football and they won't travel. There may be one or two games they care about but playing JSU would not be one of them. On top of that, we would have to play them outside of Labor Day weekend because that is when they play Miles every year. We are in this alone no matter how you slice it if we bring a team to Jackson. So with that being said, we could bring Morehouse, Fort Valley or Albany or even Shaw and get the same crowd. I don't even see FAMU bringing fans to Jackson. I don't see FAMU bringing their band to Jackson but those D2 schools would. However, if I had to choose from an SIAC school or Delta State, I would pick Delta State. I am also game for a classic or a home-home but I loathe the thought of playing a 1-A team and that is just my personal opinion. I think it is bad for 1-A and 1-AA football.
