Bowie State University will be on the green this fall with the introduction of its inaugural men’s golf program.

They are now one of nine golf programs within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), which means they have a program for every sport the conference officially sponsors.

“It is with great excitement that we officially move forward in sponsoring a co-ed NCAA golf program that will compete in the resilient CIAA,” said Bowie State Athletic Director Clyde Doughty. “This initiative has been in development for several years, and I want to thank our dedicated golf committee for their hard work in bringing this vision to life. With Coach Edric Poitier at the helm, I am truly excited to see Bowie State University represented on the links this upcoming year.”

Edric Poitier, who has coached Bowie State’s women’s volleyball team since 2022, has been announced as the men’s golf program coach.

A former championship volleyball player who competed for the Bahamian men’s national team, Poitier has coached numerous HBCU volleyball programs off-and-on for over twenty years.

Previous stints include St. Augustine’s, Winston-Salem, Bluefield, and Savannah State.

“I’m incredibly excited to be part of this history-making opportunity. Having competed in the conference myself years ago, I understand the excitement and, more importantly, the opportunities this provides for our student-athletes,” said Poitier. “It’s not just about playing the game; it’s about learning the many facets of the golf industry. The possibilities are limitless, and I’m hopeful our students will take full advantage of what this opportunity truly represents. Not everyone will go on to play on the PGA Tour, but they can build a successful career within the golf industry.”
