Mike Davis, who led Texas Southern to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the program’s first-ever win in the tournament this past season, is reportedly leaving the school to take the Detroit Mercy head coaching job.
“We owe him a great debt of gratitude for all that he’s done,” said Dr. Charles McClelland, TSU’s vice president for intercollegiate athletics said in a statement to a Houston TV reporter.
Davis led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament four times in the last five years, including this past season when TSU beat North Carolina Centralin the First Four.
In six seasons at Texas Southern, Davis went 115-89, winning four SWAC championships.
Davis is expected to replace Bacari Alexander, who was fired at Detroit Mercy in March after two seasons, though Athletic director Robert Vowels told the Detroit News Tuesday that an agreement had not been finalized.
The Titans went 8-24 overall last season, with just 4-14 record in Horizon League play. The program last made the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
A national search for Davis’ replacement will begin immediately, McClelland said.
