North Carolina A&T turns to familiar face to lead athletic program

North Carolina A&T is turning to a familiar face to lead its athletics department.

Katreshia Louis-Verrett will return to Greensboro as the university’s new director of Intercollegiate Athletics after serving as deputy athletics director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the school announced Friday.

She will officially begin her new role Sept. 1, taking over for longtime athletics director Earl Hilton, who is stepping down after 15 years.

“I am humbled, honored and excited to serve North Carolina A&T State during this transformative period for college athletics,” Louis-Verrett said. “I look forward to supporting and expanding the reach of this university’s historic mission of academic excellence and supporting the performance of our student-athletes, coaches and staff, as well as taking advantage of new opportunities for growth and success.”

That transformation is happening quickly.

Division I schools are now operating in an era of direct revenue sharing with student-athletes, while the annual revenue-sharing cap is set to reach $21.3 million per school this year.

At the same time, NIL regulations are evolving, the College Sports Commission is reviewing deals and institutions are navigating questions surrounding booster involvement, deal valuations, enforcement and potential legal challenges.

A&T believes Louis-Verrett is equipped for that environment.

“At North Carolina A&T, our commitment to student success is our No. 1 priority, and that certainly includes the success of our student athletes,” Chancellor James R. Martin II said. “Katreshia is equally passionate about that commitment, as well as ensuring that our athletics teams and student athletes have the resources, guidance and support to succeed in competition.”

Louis-Verrett is hardly a stranger to A&T

She previously worked at the university from 2011-17, serving as associate athletics director and overseeing compliance, departmental human resources and 33 staff members, including seven head coaches.

That previous experience became a significant part of her candidacy during a competitive national search.

But her résumé extends well beyond Greensboro.

Louis-Verrett spent five years as an assistant athletics director at Georgia Tech and has served on key NCAA committees, giving her firsthand experience with the rules and policies shaping college sports.

Her expertise includes NCAA regulations and compliance, NIL strategy, sports administration and Title IX issues — areas that could become increasingly important as A&T works to remain competitive while navigating an increasingly complicated athletics landscape.

“She is fiercely competitive herself and will expect excellence from our coaches, staff and student athletes,” Martin said. “We are delighted that she is rejoining A&T and expecting great things under her leadership.”

That competitive edge comes from experience, too.

Louis-Verrett was a collegiate track and field athlete at the University of Miami and a two-time Big East champion. She knows what it means to balance the demands of high-level competition with academics and the broader college experience.

Now she will be responsible for creating that environment for more than 300 student-athletes at A&T.

A Big Year to Come Home

Louis-Verrett’s return comes at a particularly important moment for Aggie Athletics.

A&T will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its football program this fall, with the football homecoming game taking place during the 100th edition of the Greatest Homecoming on Earth.

Louis-Verrett will oversee 17 intercollegiate athletics programs and nearly 50 coaches and staff members as A&T looks to build on those successes.
