BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southwestern Athletic Conference has named Texas Southern University bowler Brianna Miller-LeForbes as its 2014 SWAC Woman of the Year.

Miller-LeForbes (Riverside, Calif./P HS) lettered as a student athlete and obtained a bachelors degree at TSU in Administration of Justice with a minor in Psychology this past May. In addition to earning her degree and being a four year member of the Lady Tigers bowling team, she was also a peer mentor volunteer, a member of SAAC, all while earning a spot on the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College list.

“My experience as a scholar athlete has made me a better person by being more social, competitive, hardworking, committed and realizing how much helping and giving back has affected my life”. Miller-LeForbes said.

Miller LeForbers was tabbed as the 2014 Kat Klash Bowling Tournament MVP this past season at Sam Houston State. She helped lead the team to a second place finish at the SWAC Bowling East Round-up while also completing the day with the 3rd highest individual average (194.6) for both East and West SWAC Round Up participants.

The SWAC Woman of the Year is selected by league committee members using numeric scoring defined by guidelines and specific criteria during the candidate review. The SWAC Woman of the Year will then represent the conference as a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year selection process.

The SWAC Woman of the Year selection includes a review of the student athletes’ service and leadership, academic achievement, athletics excellence and personal statement. The candidates nominated must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and participate in one of the member institutions sponsored sports. The nominee must also submit a 200-word personal statement describing her experience in community service, as a scholar, an athlete, and a leader on her campus. They must also emphasize how the engagements have influenced their life and shaped their professional growth.

Other 2014 SWAC Woman of the Year nominees include: Marie Cabane (Arkansas Pine Bluff-Tennis), Kelsey Espinosa (Prairie View-Volleyball), Kesica Jayapalan (Jackson State –Tennis), and Bianca Vigliante (Mississippi Valley State-Soccer).

The SWAC Woman of the Year award began in 2011 with co-winners, Prairie View A&M’s Peni Sanjoto (Golf) Kristina Sadler (Bowling), and Kameron Boggan (Volleyball) receiving the honor.
