T.C. Taylor has led Jackson State to first place in the SWAC East in just his second season as head coach and the university would like him to stick around a little while longer.

On Friday, JSU President Marcus Thompson and athletic director Ashley Robinson announced that the former Tigers wide receiver had been given a contract extension. The terms of the extension were not disclosed as of the publication of this story.

“It’s truly a blessing, and it lets me know that all the work I have done in the last year and a half as a head coach has not gone unnoticed by our great AD Ashley Robinson and our President, Dr. Thompson,” Taylor said in a statement. “It is truly a blessing to be the head coach of my alma mater, and now I can turn my focus to building this football program.”

Originally a quarterback at Jackson State, Taylor moved to wide receiver. In 2001, he set program records for receptions (84), gaining 1,234 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was a first-team Black College All-American and third-team All-American by The Sports Network. Taylor was a member of the New England Patriots practice squad and played in the World League for a time before beginning his coaching career.

He returned to JSU in 2019 as a tight ends and receivers coach and was elevated to offensive coordinator as a member of Deion Sanders’ two SWAC championship teams. After Sanders left for Colorado, Taylor was promoted to head coach and finished 7-4 in 2023. Currently, Jackson State is 6-2 overall and 3-0 in SWAC East play, a game ahead of Florida A&M and Alabama State.
