The Delaware State University administration saw enough success in DeSean Jackson’s first year as head football coach to keep him around Dover, hopefully, a little while longer.

Tuesday morning, the school announced that Jackson had signed a new contract that will take him through the 2028 season as head football coach.

Jackson led the Hornets to an 8-4 record, their best record since 2007, the last time the program won the MEAC.

Delaware State led all of NCAA FCS in rushing with 291 yards per game and won a MEAC contest for the first time in three years. The Hornets (4-1 in conference play) were in the MEAC title chase until the season’s final week, falling to eventual Celebration Bowl champion South Carolina State 28-17.

“Giving my whole self to these young men and representing one of the best Historically Black Colleges in the country has been a high honor and one I do not intend to take for granted,” Jackson said in a statement released by the University. “We have some unfinished business to take care of on the field, and I am proud to be a part of the athletic transformation taking place at the school.”

The contract extension comes on the first anniversary of Jackson’s interview and hire by the university. In that time, Jackson transformed a program that had not secured a winning season since 2012 into one of the year’s best sports stories.

“Our goal is to increase the number of storytellers who believe in the power of HBCUs like ours and can make the investment in a future they can see for themselves, their community, and their country,” Delaware State president Tony Allen said. “Coach Jackson understands that vision and is helping us carry that message around the world.”
