A longtime WNBA player and college assistant with a winning track record will join an HBCU coaching staff this season.

Plenette Pierson, who played 15 seasons in the WNBA, was added to new Prairie View women’s basketball coach Tai Dillard’s staff last week.

Pierson, a Houston native, played college ball at Texas Tech before being selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the 2003 WNBA draft. She eventually made her way to the Detroit Shock, helping that team win the 2006 and 2008 league championships.

Pierson also played for the New York Liberty and Dallas Wings before wrapping up her career with the Minnesota Lynx and a third league title in 2017. Over 15 years, she averaged 9.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

Pierson returned to Texas Tech as an assistant in 2022 before accepting the position at Prairie View.

Dillard was hired last month to replace Sandy Pugh, who stepped down after eight seasons as head coach.
