SWAC football: All six West Division teams remain in championship race

With six teams separated by just one game in the standings, Saturday’s matchups could go a long way toward determining who emerges from the crowded SWAC West championship race.

With three weeks remaining in the regular season, all six teams in the division are separated by just one conference game.

Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff enter Saturday tied for first place with 3-2 conference records. Grambling State, Southern and Texas Southern are one game behind at 2-3.

That leaves little room for mistakes as teams compete for the division’s representative in the Dec. 5 SWAC championship game.

And with all six programs scheduled to play Saturday, the picture could look considerably different by the end of the afternoon.

Three teams enter Saturday tied for first place

Prairie View A&M has an opportunity to strengthen its position when it hosts Alabama A&M, the current leader in the SWAC East.

The Panthers (4-5, 3-2 SWAC) have won two consecutive games and remain firmly in contention despite having a losing overall record.

Their challenge comes against an Alabama A&M team that enters 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

A Prairie View victory would improve the Panthers to 4-2 in the SWAC and give them another important win as they continue their pursuit of a second consecutive conference championship.

Meanwhile, Alcorn State (5-4, 3-2) hosts Florida A&M, which has struggled through a 2-7 season and enters the matchup with a 1-4 conference record.

The Braves have an opportunity to keep pace with the division leaders before traveling to Southern on Nov. 14.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (5-3, 3-2) faces a different challenge when it travels to Grambling State.

The Golden Lions enter the contest riding a two-game winning streak, including a 63-21 victory over Bethune-Cookman last Saturday.

A victory over Grambling would give Arkansas-Pine Bluff four conference wins heading into a Nov. 14 meeting with Prairie View, a matchup that could carry significant championship implications.

For the three teams sitting at 2-3 in conference play, Saturday represents an opportunity to close the gap.

Grambling State (4-4, 2-3) hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff after consecutive conference losses. A victory would pull the Tigers even with the Golden Lions in the standings and prevent Arkansas-Pine Bluff from building additional separation.

Southern (4-5, 2-3) hosts Bethune-Cookman following a victory over Florida A&M. The Jaguars still have games remaining against Alcorn State and Grambling State, meaning their final weeks could influence the division race.

Texas Southern (3-5, 2-3), meanwhile, hosts Alabama State while carrying a two-game winning streak into Saturday’s matchup.

The Tigers also have remaining conference games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Prairie View, giving them opportunities to affect the race directly.

With several of the contenders still scheduled to face one another, head-to-head results could become increasingly important if multiple teams finish with identical conference records.

Remaining games could decide the SWAC West champion

Saturday’s games are unlikely to settle the division championship outright, but they could determine which teams enter the final weeks with the strongest positions.

Prairie View and Arkansas-Pine Bluff meet Nov. 14, while Alcorn State travels to Southern that same day.

The Golden Lions also face Texas Southern on Nov. 21, and Grambling closes its regular season against Southern in the Bayou Classic on Nov. 28.

Those games provide several opportunities for the standings to change before the championship participants are determined.

According to the SWAC’s official standings, no West Division team entered Saturday with more than three conference victories.

The conference’s Nov. 7 schedule includes all 12 SWAC programs, with six conference matchups scheduled for 2 p.m. Central.

By Saturday evening, the standings could produce a clearer front-runner.

Or the SWAC West could head into another week with nearly everyone still chasing the same championship opportunity.
