Jackson State defensive back Robert McDaniel’s NFL dreams took a promising turn this week as the Washington Commanders held a private workout with the HBCU standout prospect.
The session, held at Jackson State, comes just days before the 2025 NFL Draft, where McDaniel is considered one of the top HBCU prospects, HBCU Legends reported.
McDaniel, a 6-foot-2, 207-pound hybrid defensive back, has drawn attention for his versatility and athleticism, excelling at both cornerback and safety. “Honestly, just playing different positions helped me,” McDaniel said of his adaptability. “Knowing the defense, knowing where you should fit, and coming in playing at the corner, nickel, or safety. It’s just showing how versatile I am, being able to put me in different positions.”
The Commanders’ interest is part of a broader uptick in attention for McDaniel, who has also been scouted by teams like Dallas, Minnesota, New England, and San Francisco.
His strong performance at the HBCU Combine and Jackson State’s Pro Day—highlighted by a 4.55-second 40-yard dash and a 39.5-inch vertical leap—has only bolstered his draft stock.

Jackson State head coach lauded McDaniel’s work ethic and leadership. “Rob has been a cornerstone for our defense. He’s a competitor, and he’s ready for the next level,” the coach said.
McDaniel, who transferred to Jackson State in 2024, helped lead the Tigers to a 12-2 record and a SWAC championship. He finished the season with 55 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and three interceptions, showing a knack for making game-changing plays.
For McDaniel, the opportunity to work out for an NFL franchise is a validation of his journey. “It’s really just a big blessing to be able to get to this point,” he said. “I just want to keep getting 1% better every day, no matter what it is”.
