Florida A&M quarterback Isaiah Knowles’ first season with the Rattlers is over after a thumb injury suffered during Saturday’s loss to South Carolina State in the Orange Blossom Classic.
Knowles confirmed the season-ending injury while speaking with HBCU Gameday, ending his lone season at Florida A&M after just two games.
The injury occurred in the second half and Knowles was later replaced by backup Dustin Fletcher.
Fletcher completed 6 of 8 passes during the game, but the Rattlers were unable to generate enough offense in a 31-13 loss.
The injury brings a disappointing end to what was expected to be a promising season for Knowles, who arrived in Tallahassee with one of the strongest résumés among HBCU quarterbacks.
The two-time reigning SIAC Offensive Player of the Year helped lead Albany State to an HBCU national championship and finished his Golden Rams career with 5,585 passing yards while completing 63% of his passes.
Knowles also led the SIAC in total offense, scoring and passing efficiency. In 2025, he guided Albany State to a program-record 12-2 season and a 10-game winning streak.
His move to Florida A&M came shortly after the school hired Gray as head coach, creating a highly anticipated reunion between quarterback and coach.
Now, Knowles will turn his attention toward recovery and finding other ways to contribute.
“It’s definitely tough to hear,” Knowles told the website. “But God doesn’t make any mistakes. Being able to just rely on Him and have my faith in Him, He has a plan and He’s in control.”
Knowles said his family has supported him through the disappointment, but he remains focused on helping his teammates.
“While I’m here, I’m going to use this time to tap into the coaching mindset and continuing to be a leader for the guys,” he said. “I know the offense like the back of my hand, so I feel there’s an opportunity for me to still help my team.”
