Less than a week after previous women’s basketball coach Nadine Domond departed to take over in a similar role at Morgan State, the Virginia State Trojans have announced who will fill the vacant position.
Former ACC assistant coach Millette Green will become the seventh head coach in the history of the CIAA’s reigning regular season champions.
“In VSU Athletics, we’re committed to aligning with both departmental and institutional priorities, and that starts with putting students at the center of everything we do,” said Virginia State University Athletic Director Tiffani-Dawn Sykes. “We were intentional about identifying a leader who prioritizes the student experience above all else, and Coach Millette Green understands that responsibility.”
This is Green’s second career head coaching job, previously serving as the head coach of Augusta University for five seasons.
In her final year with the team during the 2021-2022 season, she led them to a 15-13 record, snapping a seven-year streak without a winning record.
In the ensuing offseason, Green was hired as an assistant coach at Wake Forest University and held that position until she was hired by Virginia State.
Other previous coaching stops include Wake Forest, Fairleigh Dickinson, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Robert Morris.
Before embarking on a career in coaching, Green played collegiately at East Carolina and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).
In her two seasons at UMBC, she averaged 7.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in 56 games.
Virginia State is coming off a 2024-2025 season in which they finished with the best record in the CIAA during the regular season at 21-5, including a 14-2 conference mark.
They advanced to the CIAA championship game but fell short in a loss to Fayetteville State.
The Trojans received an at-large bid to the Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament but were eliminated in the first round by the Atlantic Region’s number-one seed, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
