The Fayetteville State Broncos’ men’s basketball team is moving in a different direction following the announcement that the school mutually parted ways with head coach Luke D’Alessio.
“I extend our deepest gratitude for the exceptional leadership and dedication that Coach D’Alessio provided as the head coach of our men’s basketball program,” said Fayetteville Athletic Director Anthony Bennett following news of D’Alessio’s departure. “His tenure has been marked by remarkable achievements. D’Alessio’s commitment to excellence has not only transformed our basketball program but has also inspired our entire community.”
D’Alessio was hired by Fayetteville State in 2019. In his five seasons with the team, he compiled a 103-52 overall record.
He helped lead the Broncos to three 20-win seasons, including in 2022 when the team won their first CIAA tournament championship since 1973.
This past season, the Broncos head coach led the team to an at-large berth in the Division II Men’s Basketball Tournament, winning the opening round over Fairmont State.
Before taking over as head coach of Fayetteville State, D’Alessio had a storied career as head coach of Bowie State from 1999-2009, which led to his induction into the school’s Hall of Fame.
In his 10 seasons with the Bulldogs, he posted a 199-96 overall record, including five seasons with at least 20 wins.
His most successful season at Bowie State came in 2003 when he led the Bulldogs to a 30-5 overall record, won the team’s first-ever CIAA tournament championship, and advanced to the national semifinals of the Division II men’s basketball tournament.
Previous coaching stops also include North Carolina Central, Siena College, Loyola University of Maryland, Community College of Baltimore-Catonsville, and The Catholic University of America.
