After being unleashed from the Detroit Lions practice squad in late 2022, James Houston exploded onto the NFL scene.
In the seven games he appeared in last season, the former Jackson State All-SWAC performer was a terror to opposing quarterbacks, recording eight sacks and also adding a forced fumble and fumble recovery in 140 defensive snaps.
The second-year edge rusher recently joined former Michigan star and NFL player Braylon Edwards and Tom Mazawey on Woodward Sports to give insight into his life and career.
Coming off a record-breaking 2022, Houston said that his goals were to expand his role within the defensive scheme and double his sack total.
“My role is majority pass rush and getting sacks,” Houston said. “I just want to expand on that. Anything else they give me, I’ll be super happy, super blessed, and fortunate. But you know, what I did was extraordinary. I set NFL records. So, I honestly just want to continue to build on that. I want to double up my sack total. If I could get that this year, that would be my dream.”
Houston enters 2023 as a player to watch. If he can meet, or even exceed the lofty expectations he has placed on himself, he will be well on the way to cementing himself as a dominant defensive force in the NFL.
