Grambling State 68, Alabama A&M 53

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Grambling State defeated Alabama A&M 68-53 on Wednesday night, the third consecutive victory for the Tigers. Grambling State (4-9, 2-0 SWAC) was led by Jazmin Boyd, who netted 18 points along with four boards and five assists in the win.

Alabama A&M (2-9, 0-2 SWAC) was led by Ebony Johnson, who scored 10 points while grabbing six rebounds in the loss.

The game was very close for the first half. Grambling State took an early 17-13 lead after the first quarter of play. The Tigers would outscore Alabama A&M 13-10 in the second to take a 30-23 halftime lead. Grambling State took control of the game in the third, outscoring the Bulldogs 23-13 in that frame to take a 52-36 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Tigers would not let Alabama A&M mount a comeback in the fourth, taking the win.

Grambling State will be in action again on Jan 7 at 3:00PM CT, when the Tigers take on Southern. Alabama A&M will face Mississippi Valley State next also on Jan. 7 at 2:00PM CT.

Alcorn State 62, Prairie View A&M 55

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State earned its first victory of the season on Wednesday night, with 62-55 victory over Prairie View A&M. Henrietta Wells led the Braves, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Tia Sanders also tallied 16 points on the night, while pulling down four boards in the win.

The Panthers were led by Alexus Parker, who netted 14 points along with grabbing six boards in the loss.

Prairie View A&M (5-9, 0-2 SWAC) got out to an early 17-15 lead after one quarter. Alcorn State (1-12, 1-1 SWAC) would take a one point halftime lead after outscoring the Panthers 21-18 in the second quarter. The Braves would take the victory after a strong fourth quarter, outscoring PVAM 16-6 in the final frame to seal the victory.

Next up, Alcorn State will take on Jackson State while Prairie View A&M will play Texas Southern. Both games will take place on Jan. 7 at 3:00PM CT.

Texas Southern 77, Southern 71 (OT)

BATON ROUGE, La. – Texas Southern extended its win streak to three games with a 77-71 victory in overtime over Southern on Wednesday. The Tigers were led by Artavia Ford and Joyce Kennerson. Ford netted 27 points along with 10 boards for a double-double. Kennerson scored 23 points while grabbing five rebounds on the night. Breasia McElrath recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 boards in the win.

The Jaguars were led by Courteni Purnell, who scored 18 points and had five rebounds in the loss.

After Southern (3-7, 1-1 SWAC) had a 10 point lead at halftime, Texas Southern would outscore the Jaguars 24-15 third quarter, to close the gap to just a one point deficit entering the fourth quarter. The Tigers would outscore Southern 16-15 in the fourth to force overtime. Texas Southern would only allow Southern to score four points in overtime, outscoring the Jaguars 10-4 to take the win.

Texas Southern and Southern will both be in action again on Jan. 7. The Tigers will take on Prairie View A&M, while Southern will take on Grambling State. Both contests are scheduled to tipoff at 3:00PM CT.

Alabama State 73, Jackson State 64 (OT)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A dominate overtime period propelled Alabama State to a 73-64 win in overtime over Jackson State on Wednesday. The Hornets were led by Britney Wright, who netted 21 points along with 15 grabbing 15 boards for a double-double in the win.

Jackson State (7-5, 1-1 SWAC) was led by Kieran Adams, who tallied 25 points and pulled down 11 boards for a double-double in the loss.

The game was a back and forth contest throughout. Alabama State (2-10, 1-1 SWAC) led 18-15 after the first quarter. The Hornets took a 35-28 advantage into the second half. Jackson State would outscore ASU 34-27 in the second half to force overtime. ASU would dominate the overtime period, outscoring the Tigers 11-2 for the win.

Alabama State and Jackson State will both be in action again on Jan. 7. The Hornets will play Arkansas Pine Bluff at 5:00PM CT while the Tigers will take on Alcorn State at 3:00PM CT.
