Hampton 64, North Carolina A&T State 57

HAMPTON, Va. — Three players scored in double figures on Wednesday evening as the Hampton University women’s basketball team opened conference play with a 64-57 win over North Carolina A&T at the HU Convocation Center.

Preseason MEAC Player of the Year Malia Tate-DeFreitas racked up 20 points – while also dishing out three assists and grabbing three steals. Jephany Brown added a season-high 13 points – going 5-for-5 from the field – and three blocks.

Chanel Green had 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while also recording three assists and a team- and career-high four steals.

Aliyah Kilpatrick and Dana Brown led the Aggies with 11 points each.

Bethune-Cookman 38, Savannah State 31

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah State University women’s basketball team (2-11, 0-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) comes up short against Bethune-Cookman University (5-8, 1-0 MEAC) 38-31 Wednesday night in Tiger Arena.

Senior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with seven points, nine rebounds and four rebounds, while senior center Jeremica Edwards added seven rebounds, five points and a game-high five steals.

Senior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added six points on 3-for-5 shooting, while senior guard Rhianna Warren added five points and three rebounds.

The Wildcats were led by Ashanti Hunt with nine points and added eight points, while Kailyn Williams led the team with 13 rebounds and four blocks and added four points.

Norfolk State 56, Morgan State 47

BALTIMORE, Md. — The Norfolk State women’s basketball team opened up a 16-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 56-47 victory over Morgan State in the conference opener for both teams on Wednesday evening at Hill Field House.

Senior Dominique Harper and junior Kayla Roberts tallied 12 points each to lead the Spartans (6-7, 1-0 MEAC). Seniors Khalilah Ali and Jordan Strode also recorded double-digit scoring games, posting 10 points each.

Harper registered her fifth consecutive double-figure scoring game and threatened to record her first career triple-double as she finished with seven rebounds and six assists. Roberts added 10 rebounds in notching her team-high sixth double-double of the season. Strode dished out four assists, while Ali swatted away a game-high four shots.

Coppin State 70, South Carolina State 54

BALTIMORE, Md. — Red-shirt junior guard Genesis Lucas finished with a game-high 24 points and eight assists leading Coppin State women’s basketball to their first victory of the season over South Carolina State, 70-54 in the MEAC opener. Senior Keena Samuels added 16 points and junior Candice Beverly recorded a career-high ten points anchoring the Eagles bench scoring.

Three Eagles ended up with double figure scoring led by Lucas’ 24 points. Junior Oluwaseun Adeniji tied a career-high with three assists and grabbed six rebounds. Beverly’s career-high scoring effort came on four made field goals. Graduate Tiara Goode tied a season-best with two assists. She grabbed seven rebounds and scored six points. Chance Graham tied her season-high with 11 rebounds for the third time this season. She also scored eight points knocking down a season-best four shots from the field.
