On the eve of the MEAC tournament, each head coach explains how their team can win it all

NORFOLK, Va. — Reginald Johnson, Jr. of Hampton was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Devin Morgan, of Delaware State, earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman’s LaRon Smith was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Johnson (G, 6-2, 190 Sr., Chicago, Ill.) totaled 50 points, 12 rebounds, 12 assists and eight steals in conference victories over Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T State. He poured in 29 points, including six 3-pointers, with nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals, in a 79-62 win against North Carolina A&T State.

Morgan (G, 5-10, 180, Fr., Chester, Va.) shot 50-percent (7-of-14) from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line against South Carolina State. He finished with 21 points, including two 3-pointers, three rebounds and four assists, in 28 minutes of play.

Smith (F, 6-8, Jr., Palm Bay, Fla.) averaged 10.5 rebounds and 4.0 blocks against Norfolk State and Coppin State. Offensively, he finished with 13 points, shooting 62.5-percent (5-of-8) from the floor in the two games.

Other Top Performers

Malcolm Bernard (FAMU) recorded a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, with four assists, two blocks and three steals, against Hampton.

Patrick Cole (NCCU) averaged 28.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, against Savannah State and Norfolk State.

Dominique Elliot (UMES) registered 28 points, 16 rebounds and six assists, against Morgan State and Savannah State.

Alex Long (NSU) scored a career-high 13 points, with six rebounds and two blocks, against Bethune-Cookman.

Dalique Mingo (HOW) posted 14 points, five rebounds and a career-high six steals, against Harvard.

Jordan Potts (BCU) averaged 17.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals, against Norfolk State and Coppin State.

Keith Shivers (CSU) tallied 10 points, nine rebounds and one steal, in a 62-54 win over Bethune-Cookman.

Jeff Short (NSU) finished with 31 points, eight rebounds, five assists, one block and two steals, against Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina Central.

Ed Stephens (SCSU) averaged 22.5 points, 2.0 assists, 1.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals, against North Carolina A&T State and Delaware State.
