Wilson-Reid Double-Double Sparks Alcorn State Win Over Arkansas-Pine Bluff

SOUTHERN def. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY, 70-52

BATON ROUGE, La. – Kendra Coleman’s 19 points led the Southern University Lady Jaguars to a 70-51 victory over Mississippi Valley Monday night at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Britney Washington scored 17 points while Briana Green added 16. MVSU was led by Christina Reed with 15 points and Ashley Beals chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds, one rebound away from recording her fifth double-double. There was back and forth action majority of the first half until jumper from Jasmine Jefferson an Coleman would give SUBR an eight point lead. The Lady Jaguars took their biggest lead, 21-8, with 10:42 remaining in the first half. Mississippi Valley was down only five points going into the second half. Southern set the tempo in the second half of the game and kept it until the time ran off the clock.

TEXAS SOUTHERN def. JACKSON STATE, 70-53

HOUSTON, Texas –  The Lady Tigers of Texas Southern defeated the Lady Tigers of Jackson State 70-53 Monday night at the H&PE Arena. Alexus Johnson recorded her fourth double-double this season with 19 points and 11 boards to led TSU. Brianna Sidney added 12 points, five steals and four rebounds.  For Jackson State, Ayanna Lynn led the way with 10 points.  Ayanna Hardy-Fuller pitched nine points. Texas Southern shot 40.7 percent from the field, 19.0 percent from the three-point line and 64.3 percent from the charity stripe.  As a team, Jackson State shot 34.7 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from the three-point range and 61.9 percent from the free-throw line.

ALCORN STATE def. ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF, 45-39

LORMAN, Miss. –  Alcorn State women’s basketball team defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 45-39 Monday night at the David L. Whitney Center. Angelic Wilson-Reid led the Lady Braves with 14 points and 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Jazmine Strane also recorded a double-double, knocking down 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Destiny Brewton and Diamond Richardson led the Lady Lions with nine points apiece. UAPB went on a 12-0 run in the first five minutes of the game. They led the entire first half by as many as 12 points. Arkansas-Pine Bluff was up one point, 23-22 going into halftime. Alcorn State took their first lead with 14:40 remaining in the second half, 31-29 and they never lost momentum.  The Lady Braves went on to win the game by six points.

PRAIRIE VIEW def. GRAMBLING, 85-57

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Four Lady Panthers scored in double figures as they claimed a 85-57 victory over Grambling State Monday night at the William Nicks Building. Alexus Parker scored a team-high 18 points and added six rebounds.  Jeanette Jackson recorded 15 points and four assists.  Shamiya Brooks recorded a double-double, knocking down 13 points and snatching a game-high 17 rebounds.  Monique Abbs chipped in 10 points. The game stayed close for the first eight minutes, but a three-pointer from Jackson would spark things up for Prairie View. They went on a 21-9 run with a little under two minutes left in the first half. PVAMU ended the first half up by 20 points, 46-26. Grambling scored 31 points to Prairie View’s 39 in the second half. The Lady Lions were led by Mariah Gilliam with 12 points and Klintisha Martin recorded her first double-double this season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. As a team GSU shot 29.9 percent from the field, 27.8 percent from the three-point range and 60.0 percent from the charity stripe.  The Lady Panthers finished the game shooting 50.7 percent from the field, 33.3 from the three-point line and 56.3 from the free-throw line.
