GCAC News and Information

  • Teams in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference went a combined 5-4 (not counting exhibition contests) last week including 0-1 against ranked foes.
  • Philander Smith, Talladega and Edward Waters have won a combined 13 games in a row.
  • GCAC Preseason Player of the Year Brandon Peters of Talladega won his first GCAC Player of the Week award of the season.
  • The first regular season NAIA Division I Coaches’ Top 25 poll will be released on Tuesday, December 9th.  Xavier has been ranked in 38 consecutive polls, which is the longest active streak in the nation.
  • GCAC teams are 22-11 at home this season, 11-17 on the road, and 8-8 at neutral sites this season.
  • Voorhees was picked to finish last in the conference in the GCAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, but as of Dec. 7th, the Tigers had a better record than SUNO (picked 5th), Tougaloo (6th), and Dillard (7th).
  • Half of the teams in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference have winning records.  This places the GCAC 6th out of the nine conferences in Division I.
  • This marks the first week since the week of Nov. 10 that no GCAC school will face a ranked opponent.

GCAC News and Information

  • The teams of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference went a combined 5-4 in games played during the past week, including a 1-1 mark against ranked opponents.
  • GCAC schools are 19-6 at home so far this season.  The conference has a 17-20 road mark and is 3-3 in games played at neutral sites.
  • The GCAC has struggled against ranked opponents, going 1-9 against teams in the NAIA Division I Coaches’ Top 25.  18th ranked Xavier is the only team to earn a win against a ranked foe.
  • Currently, 7 of 8 basketball teams have records of .500 or better.  Last season 5 GCAC teams finished the season with winning records.
  • Philander Smith’s 8-1 record represents a four-game improvement over last season’s 4-5 start.  The Lady Panthers have won 4 road games this season; they won 6 all of last season.
  • During Xavier’s four-game winning streak they have held opponents to just over 52 points per game.  In their previous 6 contests they allowed an average of 70.5 points per contest.
