That DM is Gerald Banks. .

Man, the only reason I knew that dude existed back in my early SU listening days....is I had an audio tape of some show...and, the first thing that comes on is ...."Please welcome...From Plaquemine, La....Gerald Banks"

I think that boy got zipped for taking off his hat during a backbend after Doc warned him about doing it again.

I got the story second hand, but the facts have been confirmed by all parties involved. G (Gerald Banks) is a friend of mine and his little brother, Bushwick, is my crab bro. and we marched together from 91-95'

Homecoming fall 90 doc told G to do 3 body rolls put you gotdayum head down, because the show was already running long and G had a flair for the extravagant. Anyway, G goes out there and rolls and girates and shimmies for the better part of a minute. Then he stops, sticks his stick in the ground, takes off the hat and sets it on the stick then backbends straight back with a perfect arch. Mumford goes bananas!!! But by the time he gets up, puts the hat back on and pulls his stick outta the ground, the first line is about to run his ass over. Thats how Celestine got the stick, and decided to march a fifth rip in 91 (my crab year) just so he could have a full year on the stick. But Doc didn't actually zip G until the spring, But he left that game on 3rd trumpet where he remained.

Hmmmmm. I think a certain Roy Barnes ("Rubberband Man") Might have something to say about that.

<ahem> Know your history! <ahem> :D

Sorry frat. Even frat Roy Barnes who used to follow us back then called Dre the best he had seen. Dre was the first SU DM to really be showtime with the stick. Before then most of time they just did the back bend and marched their arse off. Andre was on some different isht. He is the reason the SU DM do all what they do at the beginning of the show. We know Barnes was the first SU DM to bend back though. Just roll some 83 and 84 tapes. My LB Oops got more props because he held the stick for 3 straight years and did some things that Andre did not get a chance to. Oops was the first SU DM to take his hat off and then do the bend back at the BC in 87....the last rip for my crab class. So no disrespect to the 70s SU DMs but I guess I would start with Dinky in 82 as being one that started taking the DM to the next level.

If I ranked DMs that I have seen at SU I would say these below. I am sure I may have some years that are off.

1. Andre Ross 83 and 84
2. Derrick Oops Moss 85,86, 87
3. Darrin Celestine 90 -91
4. Terrel Jackson Jr 96, 97, 98
5. Donovan Baker 02, 03 and Louis Broadway 04,05, 06
6. Chandler Green 92,93,94,95 ......dude was not flashy but could march his arse off. Reminded me of the real old school SU DMs

Celestine and TJ are almost interchangable. I think Darrin was a better dancer though.

Their older brother Terrence "Raspberry" Banks marched with us. He was a cold HS DM. But played Alto Sax in Juke. Fall 85 crab and Spr. 86 KKPSI. Gerald was Spr. 89 I believe. He is Zock's crab brother I think.

The funny thing about Doc warning him was that the black man allowed my LB Oops to do it. But hell what could he do it was the BC and the last rip. :D

I have a serious questions to throw in this mix.

If the staff arrangers or BD conduct their own arrangements, besides doing backbends (like SU) and forming another dance troupe (like my own JSU), why are there DM's at all anymore? They appear to have been relieved of their primary responsibility of conducting the band.

Do the BD's and arrangers just not trust them any more? Had I wanted to be a DM, I would have wanted to conduct the band.

They are field generals. They lead the band on the field. They set the tempo, and start the drills, features , and dance routines. The duties have diminished but you still need one (like SU, just one).

Rumor is that Gram only has 1 DM this year. Actually I met Grams DM saturday in Baton Rouge, he's a Que. He said he is the only one at gram right now, but more may be added.

89-90 (zipped during mid-season). My brother told me that he was a beast but I think he did something during his backbend that Doc didn't like and Doc zipped him on the spot.

I never told you about me and your brother:angry: He changed my life forever but its all good. Tell him I said wassup.

G did lose the stick but he didn't get zipped. I won't say why. Maybe he would tell you himself since he is back home now. G had his own unique style which I grew to love. He did things I never saw other DM's do but at the same time G was crazy!

'89-'90 was a transition year for the Jukebox. G along with the upperclassman had a lot of pressure from Doc and the administration. Doc eventually gave in...a little:winkgrin: I think my 4th time getting zipped was with G back then because we refuse to succumb to the pressure. Ask guys like Lashawn Gary and Wilbert Rawlins. Yall new school folk just don't know the sacrifices we made for yall. That is why I am so passionate about my beloved Jukebox. Guys these days have no pride nor dedication for the beloved... JR, ZN, & Big Thunder didn't have to endure the pressures we had during my tenure there. You here the stories but I lived it. You don't hear about the President taking our scholarships or the entire band staff getting expelled from school. Remember the 48 Posse'?

I remember Doc telling me "hey lil boy! You stay in my office more than I do! Either you go or I go! I already have a band; do you?:D

Frat, you is stoopid.
You got zipped 4 times?!?!??!?!

What were the other 3 times? You better let that man be. You cant be trying to talk to Doc any kind of way.
Did I ever tell you what happened in Vegas in 02?
PsychoJag was RIGHT there, it was so funny. Your boy was about to get the business.

I can't tell you that Dawg. I can tell you one time he told me I intimidate the crabs. Dang Doc, I only wiegh 150 lbs wet, who is be scared of me? I hate crabs!:vomit:

REAL TALK. You only like 20lbs heavier now and I know I could whoop your ass.
Please ask PsychoJag what happened in Vegas. It was funny, but it could have turned out so bad for your boy (me and/or Doc).

:lmao:

That is some classic Doc isht right there. The black man should write a book with just his quotes. I can just hear him now. "Hey kid, I would like have you, but I don't need you" or "Get your own band"

 Dang Dawg, why you want to whoop me? Ques always trying to pick a fight! Thats why I don't like yall...too barbaric!

Yeah frat, yall had some different stuff going on. We may have not gone through it. But a lot of us saw some of it coming. We were just lucky that Doc still had his croonies in charge at SU before Dr. Spikes took over. So we got away with more gangster isht in the Juke. You probably would have only got zipped 1 or 2 times instead of 4. Seriously the younger Jukes don't realize the sacrifice the late 80s Jukeboxers made. That whole transition could have ended in a bad way. Lucky it didn't. But it did change the Juke forever. I still can't fathom marching with any women in the Juke. I know times had to change. But I am shole glad it happened after we got done. Doc got a little more bold with folks in the band because he was feeling pressure. We used to charge his arse up. I still remember when the upperclassmen walked out the week of the first game when I was a crab because they thought Doc was allowing us crabs to skate and trying to cut down on the err.........well intimidation(imagine that :smh:). He was alright until Wednesday when the upperclassmen still had not come back except for KKPSI. Still remember him letting the upperclassmen come back after having a meeting with them. Us crabs show up for practice and see all the upperclassmen are back so we are :scared:. Doc addresses the band with a different tone towards us crabs and all of a sudden that black mofo told the upperclassmen......."You know what, I don't see nothing" and then left the room. I will not discuss what happened next because I am still traumatized from all that. :smh: Doc was on some other isht back then. He had no mercy. That's why we had to man up to his arse some times. Or else he would always find some way to intimidate you. That isht was fun fugging with his black arse. LOL

 Dang Dawg, why you want to whoop me? Ques always trying to pick a fight! Thats why I don't like yall...too barbaric!

Come on Frat, you know Ill murder someone if they fugg with you.
Dont no one mess with my LC (Line Cousin).

Man yall ole (no disrespect) SU cats have the best stories.

you never mentioned Carpet Fresh '88

Straight???? Okay then, well THAT'S an endorsement I can trust!!!

By the way, I have footage of Chandler "Silky Smooth" Green -- he was nice. I will also say that TJ was one of the best I have ever seen -- that boy was a soldier!

Carpet Fresh. LOL. SPR87.....did he tell yall how he got that name?
Yeah ole Grace as we called him. Mr. Pitts from Clinton only had the stick for yall's crab year. I can't really judge him accurately with only being DM for one year. Same for Gerald. Both had the potential to be great ones. But usually it takes a SU DM a year before they are comfortable doing things. Oops was good in 85, but on fire in 86 and 87. Just like Dre was good in 83 but was crazy good in 84. I just wonder if he had not joined the Navy and came back in 85 what he would have done. Dude was just sick with it. Some folks were just born to be DM. He was one of them. Plus he was mean mofo to crabs. LOL. We used called him a beyotch because he would take no isht from you skating or messing up. Still can hear that pratice mace of his rattling when walked with it. "Shut up crabs and line your dumb arses against the wall..... then make his mace rattle rattle" All of us crabs looking like this>>>>>>>:uhoh::sick::scared:

Hey Chapter Bruh! So you marched with the likes of Mobile and DH? I saw Mobile when I was on line. He was a Professor in Chemistry at the time while DH was teaching History. DH used to wear those small horn rim glasses, gym shorts, torn t-shirts, and cowboy boots! He had to be on the most feared on the yard back then. I remember his old army stories he told about ranger school. That brother was wild!

Mobile? You mean "Alabama?" (Dr. William Belisle)

That boy was WILD!!!!!! Still is, as I understand it! Heck, I marched with Byron Augustine (Goose's older Brother) I also remember when Goose was a senior at St. Aug.

Yep, "Alabama"! We were together a few weeks ago at the SU/FAMU game. Byron used to come around a few times when I marched. He is nothing like his brother.:spin:

Co-sign on your entire post, Zock. But, you were zipped behind B.S. How can a person, that doesn't bother anyone, get zipped. The B.S. we put up with Doc, Goose, and the politics.
