SWAC Men B-Ball Preseason Favorites

Sometimes you actually make some sense while other times you sound like a clown. This time is the latter.

Just remember that one of those SWAC Ls TSU took last year came in blowout fashion on national TV.

Preseason polls are just that. Preseason. Let's see how things shake out by March

LOL It was a fluke win, I watched the whole game on ESPN and those guys were super hyped on adrenaline playing against a heavy SWAC favorite on national television ... everything they threw up was falling in. We beat them 92-61 in Houston a couple weeks later

But I actually hope I'm wrong about MVSU. It'll make for a more interesting and competitive season. Right now, I'm expecting TSU to easily win it all .. they might not go undefeated in conference play but my expectations are they will handily win both titles (regular season and tourney). I see MVSU has two Houston natives on the squad ... interesting.

Most teams play big boy ball but the problem Bama State is not good at it. Hence no big victories (like when we defeated #24 Michigan State in Michigan in 2014), no SWAC Championships (we're defending champs), and no NCAA Tourney Bids (we've had the most bids since 2010).

I'm expecting maybe two other teams to be competitive for the title this year ..... that's Southern University and ?.
2015 Bama State beat a 20 win Virginia Tech and have beat several OOC schools. You clearly are limited on your knowledge of SWAC sports by posting the comments that you have posted in here.

Lately the polls have been right.

A&M
Gram
PV isnt banned but they will have limited practice time this season
SU is on a 5 year ban

MVSU and Alcorn just got cleared for this season

Over in the MEAC, Howard and SSU are banned.
Where you got your info from? Our men's team hasn't been banned for the past 2-3 seasons, and 90% of the department is clear of the mess from the past. Remember we won the 2016 SWAC Tournament and played Holy Cross. Had we won last season, we would have gone to the NCAA tournament again.

I hear ya, but it is time to raise the bar in the NCAA tournament. If sTu is going to be the face of the SWAC, it's time to show that our best can win a first four game or pull off an upset.

I agree ... Mike Davis preaches this all the time that's his goal.

I can definitely believe that. I was big on y'all hiring him just like I am still big on th Haywood hire although he is struggling right now. Anyway, Davis knows that his only ticket to the major divisions is a 20+ win season and post season win. sTu is on fire right now in basketball until winning the SWAC tournament isn't anything new. For the past 3 years, I believed that sTu has the talent and coaching to win a play n game or pull of an upset or nail bitter against the right #2 seed if they got in as a #15.

If we’re not the face of the SWAC in basketball, who is? TSU has been to the tournament 3 times in the last 5 years. TSU has won the conference 5 times in the last 7 years.

How did SU do in their last NCAA Tournament?

I agree that sTu is the face of SWAC basketball right now, but it's time to showcase the talent in the post season. With the way sTu has been the official conference champion 3 of the past 7 years, (5 regular season titles), NCAA basketball fans expect closer games in the March Madness tournament and NIT than the Tigers have given. Losing to Cal Poly 81-69 in a first four game shouldn't happen anymore. Valparaiso gave sTu every reason to win the NIT game in 2016, and the Tigers refused to take it by playing terrified. Davis really need to put his foot down and let these guys know that winning a SWAC title isn't enough if they want to make a name for sTu in the NCAA Basketball world. Good luck.

They have failed miserably in NCAA play. They aren’t the face of the SWAC

I respectfully disagree Jag. They are the face of the conference in basketball right now. They have pulled of a 1993 SU kind of thing just yet, but they have the resume for the title. They just need to make post season statements.

Whoa buddy ... it's on record that Mike Davis is not interested leaving TSU b/c out of his mouth he said he wants to make Houston home and doesn't want to uproot his family who also love it here. I mean Houston is a great place to live and a world-class city (hurricanes and all).

I have no comment on Haywood.

Man. On record or not, Davis will leave for any major conference program if he gets a shot. The man has been in he major mix before, but he isn't some older coach who has found a home or lacks the fuel. Davis is totally fine at sTu because he is in a weak conference and making $200k to win SWAC titles. However, if North Texas, ULM, USM, USF and even Tulane don't get the blank together this year and Mike has another big year plus solid post season, he will be on these teams list. Please click and save that sentence. I know for a fact that the Tulane and South Alabama folks are watching him.

Actually he said he doesn't like the politics at the major programs (worse as a black man). He's clearly not driven by money at this point ... he's driven by stability and comfort. He has a great relationship with our A.D., he loves his home in Houston, he loves the alumni, and his amazing basketball IQ will ensure he remains a dominate force in the SWAC and among mid-majors.

Mike Davis said he is happy and wants to retire with us. I know you think you right, but you couldn't be more wrong lol. I truly believe him when he says he's over the major programs and loves TSU/Houston ... besides he's been there and done that.

I respect ya, but make sure you remember this thread. Davis will leave the SWAC on his first train ticket.

I agree that Mike Davis will take the first thing smoking out of Texas Southern. This is his only paycheck. I am in Houston and watches the program closely. Dont let that smooth taste fool you. Without coach Marsh coaching the defense my money is on the field to win swac title and tourney. I am TSU through and through but i am not seeing the conference title or ncaa bid. If they win it I will buy the first ticket to NCAA tourney like i always have. Davis is no Bob Moreland.
