SWAC Men B-Ball Preseason Favorites

A&M

PV isnt banned but they will have limited practice time this season
SU is on a 5 year ban

MVSU and Alcorn just got cleared for this season

Over in the MEAC, Howard and SSU are banned.

But 5 star players are supposed to come play here.

Whoa buddy ... it's on record that Mike Davis is not interested leaving TSU b/c out of his mouth he said he wants to make Houston home and doesn't want to uproot his family who also love it here. I mean Houston is a great place to live and a world-class city (hurricanes and all).

That dude is gone as soon as he gets a chance

If we’re not the face of the SWAC in basketball, who is? TSU has been to the tournament 3 times in the last 5 years. TSU has won the conference 5 times in the last 7 years.

How did SU do in their last NCAA Tournament?
Look at our tournament history it speaks for itself. Taking #1 Gonzaga down to the wire. Even under spivery, give Duke a hell of a game.

You had to bring up that Gonzaga game. Them cheating folks. Yall exposed them bad. I have never seen a worse #1 seed in my life.

Only Grambling is banned from the SWAC and they are no where close to going to the post season anyway.

On the MEAC side, it's only SSU.

Where you got your info from? Our men's team hasn't been banned for the past 2-3 seasons, and 90% of the department is clear of the mess from the past. Remember we won the 2016 SWAC Tournament and played Holy Cross. Had we won last season, we would have gone to the NCAA tournament again.

That's what the magazine said. Should have known they don't know wtf they are talking about when it comes to our schools smh.

Really wish HBCUs had our own magazine.

Southern University: Men’s baseball, men’s cross country, men’s track, women’s cross country

Our baseball team is under the post-season ban, but not basketball.

The last time I checked Holy Cross is not close to being North Carolina. By the way NC won the tournament last year. How did that Holy Cross team finish?

That loss to Holy Cross was absolutely pathetic. However, SU has earned their stripes in the NCAA tournament as they still own the SWAC's last upset win, and strong performance against Gonzales. SU has shown in basketball and baseball in the modern era that they can represent the SWAC well.

Yeah but everyone and they mama was saying Gonzaga did not deserve the #1 seed and they would have an early exit which they did. But I was happy to see the Jags go toe-to-toe with 'em regardless ... I remember losing my voice cheering them on. I have always been fully behind anyone who represents the conference in post season play on the national stage, even if it wasn't my team.

And we own the biggest upset in modern SWAC basketball history. We defeated the always ranked powerhouse Michigan State at their sold out home arena (not a neutral site like with SU's upset) which became a Final Four team that season. We defeated a Final Four team at their home ... how many mid-major schools can say that EVER?

I agree that Mike Davis will take the first thing smoking out of Texas Southern. This is his only paycheck. I am in Houston and watches the program closely. Dont let that smooth taste fool you. Without coach Marsh coaching the defense my money is on the field to win swac title and tourney. I am TSU through and through but i am not seeing the conference title or ncaa bid. If they win it I will buy the first ticket to NCAA tourney like i always have. Davis is no Bob Moreland.

Damn!! BBALL, stop beating around the bush and tell us how you really feel. WOW!!!

Did you not read this article??

"Teams ruled ineligible for the postseason tilt heavily toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including the men’s basketball programs at Alabama A&M, Grambling and Savannah State. Four teams at Southern University will miss the 2017-18 postseason including men’s baseball, men’s cross country, men’s track and women’s cross country."

I remember many saying that Gonzaga was the weakest #1 seed, but not that the didn't belong. That was one of the reasons I picked SU (and many folks around here called me crazy), to give them pure hell and they did. Unlike most SWAC champions, they represented the SWAC well in the big dance. They even played Duke tough before the run was allowed. That Holy Cross performance was ridiculous.

sTu defeated Michigan State and it was a great "regular season " win for the program and the SWAC. But it is not the biggest SWAC win or mid major (although we really fall in the "minor major" bracket) win ever. As far as the SWAC goes, you can't compare a regular season win with a NCAA tournament win. If we had the space on this thread after you do your research, we could post the many mid and minor majors who have stolen a win over final four bound teams early in the regular season. sTu is definitely in that number, but it's not the "greatest win" of the conference or mid and minor majors.

SU owns a win over #4 Georgia Tech in the NCAA Tournament. That's a good ole "when it counts" win. Regular season and post season games carry don't carry the same weight no matter who it is. When you are in the tournament, you must perform. If sTu is going to be the face of the SWAC, then dammit, own it and represent the SWAC well in the postseason. To be content/comfortable/ complacent with being the best of the conference is extremely disappointing. Raise the bar if you want to be known. If I was a sTu fan (and I am when y'all are playing in the NCAA tournament) I would want more.

Y'all might call me crazy again, but it's not impossible for Saturday basketball to get a #24 or #25 ranking in the future.

I have been preaching this for i don't know how long. Coach Davis talks about TSU becoming a true mid-major and wanting to make history with taking us far in the tourney, but the team's mindset and preparation hasn't matched the talk. It has become frustrating to watch us just be okay with being the "best" program in the SWAC and still performing badly in the first four game or first round of the NCAA tournament. Yes we have made some noise that lasted one or two nights on ESPN, but that doesnt mean much in the grand scheme of building a program. Like you said, raise the bar, especially since that has been the spoken expectation. I wholeheartedly agree.

Respect here.

It will be a tough job to turn TSU into a true mid major because it lacks the huge fan support in ticket sales and donations to internally raise the necessary funds. TSU externally raises a lot of money by playing ten or twelve guarantee games and putting that money back into the program. If TSU began beating majors and mid majors in guarantee games, those schools will stop.playing TSU. Thus, the money needed to operate the program at a high level will dry up. Coach Marsh talked about the cold shoulders TSU got from some schools after that Mich. State win. Same thing happened to us after we beat Miss. State a few years ago.

Marketing is really lacking with basketball. And Houston is so big and most of our alumni don't live close to the university unlike other schools in smaller cities with lighter traffic problems ... that hurts us too with attendance. I know one TSU alumni that lives in Third Ward .... everyone else I know is in Missouri City, Clear Lake, Alief, Pearland, Katy, The Woodlands, Spring, North Houston, Galena Park, Galleria.
