Southern wins SWAC title over Alabama St.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rolanda Monroe scored 17 points, and Southern University won the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament Saturday with a 61-58 victory over Alabama State.

Fredrieka Lewis added 16 points and teamed with Monroe to score 23 of the Jaguars' final 24. Monroe scored the last 10 points from the foul line to hold off Alabama State's rally and help Southern earn an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

Monroe was 13-for-13 from the free throw but made only two of 11 shots from the floor for Southern, which led 21-18 at halftime.

The Hornets tied it 46-46 at the 6-minute mark on a 3-pointer by Shantae Robinson. But Lewis anchored a 7-1 run to give Southern (19-10) the lead for good.

Alabama State cut the deficit to one in the final minute, but Monroe's clutch foul shooting kept Southern in front.

Tashia Holston scored 17 points to lead Alabama State (17-13), and Robinson added 13 - going 3-for-3 from behind the arc.

Southern shot 90 percent from the foul line in the second half (20 of 22) and made 27 of 32 overall. Alabama State shot 36 percent from the floor and converted 12 of 17 free throws.
