SWAC Championship Game Rumor





I'm not sure why some of you consider this a horrible idea considering the alternative. The SCG is the SWAC's signature event. I'd rather have it in Birmingham than not have it at all. However, to make a decision like this at the last minute is head-scratching.

Because now it's going to be whether they go to Birmingham for SCG or Atlanta for the CB. One is going to suffer.

That's why I said it was a horrible idea; it's at the last minute.

My belief is simple...allow the team with the best record to host it on their campus.
 
The challenge with the HAM is the weather can be very unpredictable in December. For that same fact it could be the same holding it on any of the SWAC campuses. You know if its cold or raining we are not going to show up. Need an indoor facility.

The alternative is letting the team with the best record, host. Bham is cool tho. I guess. It's convenient for JSU fans.
 
The SCG in Bham started with JSU and ended with JSU. The SCG in Houston started with JSU and ended with no fan fare. Its only right for JSU to kick start this back up right!

how is it last minute? They got 5 months to plan. Granted, they need to get on it but aint nobody checking for the SCG in July. lol

For the simple reason as you stated, it's in Birmingham. But like you said I'd rather have the game than not have it at all.

The only reason it was/is a much better deal than Houston is because the SWAC had a "commish" who did not know sh*t from shinola and just wanted to strut like he was in charge of something.
 



The SWAC needed either PV, Texas Southern or Southern to make the championship game successful in Houston.

PV or Texas Southern for the mere fact that if either team is winning and the championship is in their own back yard it will be packed (on our run in 2010 we were having some very well attended games).

Southern has just as many former students living in the Houston and Dallas metropolitan areas as they do than the entire state of Louisiana.

That rationale doesn't even make sense...not saying yay or nay on the location decision but if you know NOW where it's going to be, going by your idea of letting the team with the best record host, you might not know who has the best record until Thanksgiving weekend.

I will say this much, the only issue I saw from Houston was the fact there was no additional financial support from the city or sponsors. Cant put that all on the city cause we dont what was asked of them if anything but I think we can all agree that the former commish was piss poor in terms of gaining beyond adequate financial sponsorships.

Everyone blames the commissioner, but he works at the will and pleasure of the COPAC. The COPAC could and should have shown more discernment.

Water under the bridge now, with several lessons learned.

1 lesson: we are not as big of a draw as we think we are. Viewing things in totality, it was foolish to arrange an NFL and NBA venue. Just my opinion, but I dont believe anyone could arrange the amount of partnerships and sponsorships to adequately cover the cost of NRG and the Toyota Center annually.

Unless we were PWIs. We’d probably get paid to play at those venues. Smh.

Now one thing I keep trying to tell folks is at what point do you realize the attendance for this game will NEVER be that of a Classic. We lead FCS in attendance every year with anywhere between 14k and 16k on average. If we get 21k and up for the game, that's a success and anything over that is gravy. This is a game in December, leaving the Thanksgiving holiday and entering the true Christmas shopping season. A lot of years you dont even know who is going to be in the game from the West because scenarios usually involved Grambling and Southern either needing to win the Bayou Classic to go to the SCG or another team needing one of them to lose and they get the bid. Then the SCG is the next week. That's a huge financial hit to black folks wallet at that time of year. So I think as long as we draw more than the FCS Championship then we are good and even in our worst years we have done that.

Now back to Duer, he could have and should have been able to get SOMETHING in terms of additional sponsors. That's your main job, rather than worrying about if the bands are playing while the QB under center.
