SWAC Championship Game Rumor


COP operates on the information that is provided to them by the Conference office pretty much - just like a school's Board of Trustees, they cant (shouldnt) run the day to day operations. The Commish suggests, informs etc, what moves should be made in the best interest of the conference, should provide supporting documentations etc the COP discuss the issues and vote them up or down. They are not going to tell the commish what sponsors to go after, where championships should be held - thats why they hire a Commish - if I gotta do all of that then I dont need a Commish. Duer just made sure he gave "only enough" info that he wanted them to have. For instance he blamed the SCG for the Conference losing money and thats why HE wanted to end the game - to make it seem like it was the "Event" that was costly - not HIS inability to secure the requisite sponsorships, negotiating deals with the stadium etc. And because HE didnt do his job, THAT'S why the "Events" lost money - and the schools have not gotten a payout from the conference (the lack of a payout from the Conference is what FINALLY made the COP say "hold da phuck up" - whats really goin on)
 
Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but I don't know about the "legalities" of football.......does the return of the SCG mean we'll have to go back to the 9-conference game mandate?

If anything, conference schedule should go to an 8-game slate. Rotate a team from opposing division off annually.

That way, he possibility of a fresh matchup for he SCG could be used to draw more people. Also, preserve three non conference dates to fill.

Didn't we (SWAC) used to do this? Or was it a 7-game mandate? I wanna say I remember those days when UAPB would have 11 (sometimes 12) games on their schedule because I'd make at least 10.

According to some people I guess the R Kelly fiasco was the COPs decision. That did as much harm to subsequent SCGs than the "commish's" inability to do his job.

And I will say this again...now that the SCG is in Birmingham it better be loaded with 'Bamas...whether they are in the championship(s) or not.

I believe it was a 7- or 8-Game schedule prior to divisional play.

It was a 7 game conference schedule. Some schools complained that they coudn't fill their non conference game out and the conference went to a full 9 game schedule.
 



I told y'all in the SWAC commissioner thread it was coming back to Birmingham and y'all laughed at me........... Y'all gonna learn to listen. I already knew this. Pillow talk told me about this and other moves but y'all think y'all know everything......

During the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the SWAC mandated an 7 game conference slate so more schools could schedule quality non-conference games. Some teams did play 8 or 9 games against opponents from the SWAC but only 7 of the games counted.
For example, during my senior year in 2008, We (Southern) hosted Mississippi Valley in Week 3 but the win did not count toward the SWAC Standings. That same year, Jackson State & Grambling played in week 4 and that game did not count towards the SWAC standings either.

In 2010, the SWAC went back to a 9 game conference slate.

Cut the BS dude. Texas Southern didnt support it in their own hometown! Basketball or football!

In 13 years of the SCG being played in Birmingham, the game had an average attendance of 28,101. In 5 years of playing in Houston the game had an average attendance of 33,566, that is an increase of 5,465 people in average - but thats in a climate controlled, sparkling NFL stadium. Even with games of cold weather, raining weather, raining and cold weather, with an "aged" stadium, the game is averaging 28k. I am sure there are some Southern folks that can remember the 2 games with Bama State and especially the second game how terrible the weather was - that game only had 22k - which was a 10k person drop from that previous year's game. I guess what I am saying is that even in the comfortable confines of NRG the increase of 5k folks in attendance aint exactly what I would term kicking ass regarding who was turning out. Especially when compared to the previous conditions. And I go back to a point I have made earlier - anything we get over 21k is gravy.
