PV or Texas Southern for the mere fact that if either team is winning and the championship is in their own back yard it will be packed (on our run in 2010 we were having some very well attended games).

Southern has just as many former students living in the Houston and Dallas metropolitan areas as they do than the entire state of Louisiana.

We lead FCS in attendance every year with anywhere between 14k and 16k on average. If we get 21k and up for the game, that's a success and anything over that is gravy. A lot of years you dont even know who is going to be in the game from the West because scenarios usually involved Grambling and Southern either needing to win the Bayou Classic to go to the SCG or another team needing one of them to lose and they get the bid. Then the SCG is the next week. That's a huge financial hit to black folks wallet at that time of year. So I think as long as we draw more than the FCS Championship then we are good and even in our worst years we have done that.

Now back to Duer, he could have and should have been able to get SOMETHING in terms of additional sponsors. That's your main job, rather than worrying about if the bands are playing while the QB under center.

That's part of the commisioner's job to negotiate these deals and he got schooled. Now we have no one in that position and this is what we get.

Water under the bridge now, with several lessons learned.

1 lesson: we are not as big of a draw as we think we are. Viewing things in totality, it was foolish to arrange an NFL and NBA venue. Just my opinion, but I dont believe anyone could arrange the amount of partnerships and sponsorships to adequately cover the cost of NRG and the Toyota Center annually.

So, you are saying the COPAC kept the "commish" from securing better deals and corporate support? For the record, as soon as the Labor Day Classic left NRG The Battle of the Piney Woods stepped in and has been there ever since.

Kinda unrelated since they are on different weekends. What stepped in on Labor Day weekend is the Advocare Texas Kickoff

They started when the LDC was still there. They just had the backing of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment (Houston Texans). That's who the Swac needed to team up with for the SCG in Houston.

They should have known his limitations and waited to find a new commish instead of letting the village idiot tank the operation.

But the COPAC were/are PhDs with academic tunnel vision and HNIC complexes. So this is what we end up with.

No FCS teams will draw that much to justify the cost and space. Maybe NDSU or Montana but they are flagship universities.

Then you NEGOTIATE a better deal and/or get better underwriters. Selling the SWAC was not the "commish's" strong suit....as a matter of fact he sucked at it.

well first off, you kinda have to like who you work for/with, not only like them, you need to have a respect for who you work for also. For Duer, this was a job, a paycheck, he didnt/doesnt care about the SWAC, he doesnt LOVE or RESPECT the SWAC - the Universities, the history, the fans and alumni, the HBCU experience - it was just a job to do as long as he could get away with the very minimum at best.

I totally disagree. It can be done BUT you need the sponsorships to do it. It has been proven. The game has had 30-50K more than half the time the game has happened. Those ARE Classic numbers. The first three in Houston averaged close to 40K. Some of the lowest attended games simply had bad weather (ie JSU vs GSU in 2009 and SU vs AlaState in either 2003 or 2004 and good LAWD that PV-AAMU game in 2009! ). The overall average attendance for ALL games is 31,000. The ball was dropped in Houston, plain and simple starting with the RKelly concert debacle. The game does need surrounding events like a Classic and you need sponsors to get the natives interested and to get people willing to drive 3-4 hours. We really were not THAT deep in the hole with the game. A few more sponsors and more advertising to get more fans in the arena would probably have kept the game afloat. 25K paying fans wont get it. I think it needs to be at least 35K per year until you get some teams like JSU or SU who can put it over 40! I think any team can carry a decent crowd in Houston except for AAMU, who cant even carry a crowd in Birmingham and maybe Valley. But who knows, if Valley goes, every Valley alum from the cradle to the grave might show up! lol Valley used to pack Memorial in 80s and 90s. Valley used to actually be a big game for JSU.

The COPs have their own jobs to do, they cant run the SWAC. They need a good person in charge to get the job the done and, more importantly, they need someone with the heart of Tom Joyner for HBCUs to do it!
