The 2016 SWAC Champion Alabama State baseball team will face Florida State in the Tallahassee Regional Friday at 5 p.m. CT.

The Hornets (38-15), the fourth-seed in the region, will face top-seeded Florida State (37-20) in one of two opening round games on Friday at Dick Howser Stadium / Mike Martin Field. #2-seed Southern Miss (40-18) will face #3-seed South Alabama (40-20) at 11 a.m. Friday in the double elimination tournament. Every Hornets game will be broadcast live on bamastatesports.com, with Friday's game also video streamed live on ESPN3.com

Man. Hornet fans must have been jumping for joy when this selection was announced. FSU, (who has been inconsistent all season), is the most beatable top seed this year. I am shocked at this selection. I thought for sure that ASU was going to thrown to SEC Regionals. ASU has the tools to give FSU a game this year. In fact, ASU should have beaten FSU last season. The Hornets had the Noles on the ropes, but two big homers brought FSU back into the game. A wild pitch in the bottom of the 8th lost the game.

Bama State is better this year, and Florida State isn't. If ASU ever wanted to make a name for themselves and a legendary season, this would very well be their chance. If I were calling the shots for ASU, Alicea would be called to face the Noles. I think he has what it takes to keep them off balance.

Let's go ASU. You guys can beat FSU. I don't understand how they got to host a regional, but then again, the system is set up for it. At least y'all are in a good position to make some noise early. South Alabama and Florida State are overrated.

yeah, I listened to that fsu game last year. they really should have one that one. already have beaten south alabama. they have to be feeling like they have the opportunity to beat florida state and certainly south alabama again.

ACC Baseball is the reason why they are hosting a region. This might be a wide open region.

Alabama State the 4-seed could knock them off too. They have a good #1 pitcher, and can score some runs if you aren't careful.

Yeah, bama st is coached my Mervyl Melendez who built up bethune cookman via strong florida and Puerto Rico recruiting. Has done the same with this gig, roster filled with Florida boys

^^ yep ASU is solid club, well coached. Couple of nice arms, some pop in middle of order. they give AU a battle more times than not when they play.

Looks like Camacho will get the start on tomorrow against FSU.

ASU’s Camacho ready for another big stage

Alabama State senior pitcher Joseph Camacho said this is the moment he’s been waiting for since walking on campus four years ago.

Camacho, the three-time Southwestern Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, hopes to add another win over a top-tier opponent to his already stellar resume.

The Hornets (38-15) will challenge Florida State (37-20) in the first round of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at 5 p.m. today.

Camacho, who already has wins over Miami (Florida) and Cal State Fullerton, said his experience in big games will be a huge plus as he takes the mound.

“We know what we have to deal with in games like this,” Camacho said. “I believe we can do it. We have to try to avoid getting overwhelmed by the moment. If we do that, we should be fine.”

Camacho has a 36-4 career record with a 3.28 ERA and six complete games. Camacho turned in a 10-0 record with a 2.04 ERA in 12 starts this season.

Camacho has allowed no more than two earned runs in all but one game this season. His 82 strikeouts are fourth in the SWAC and he has thrown three complete games this season.

Hornets head coach Mervyl Melendez said Camacho is a big-game pitcher and has all the ability to knock off any lineup.

“He’s been a workhorse for us since the beginning,” Melendez said. “Whenever he takes the mound, we know he’s going to give us a great chance to win. He hasn’t lost a start in over two years, so he’s been solid. I feel great about our pitching staff, and he’s a big reason why.”

Camacho earned his first career save in the SWAC tournament title game against Texas Southern. Camacho said he told Melendez that he wanted to be in that situation.

After the final out was recorded, Camacho said he thought about what the Hornets could accomplish in the postseason.

“Being a starter here for four years, that was a big moment for me,” Camacho said. “Coach gave me the chance and it was a wonderful feeling. We have a great team and we feel we can win some games in the NCAA’s.”
