Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

Tutoring and grades aren't the issue. Graduation is the issue. We have to do a better job with retention. Of course, we all have our academic casualites who come up short in the fall and are ineligible, but the problem (with JSU, at least, can't speak for SU) is that we have had guys come in, play one year of ball, and are out before Spring Break. Then we had guys who just had their scholarships pulled by Comegy and faded into obscurity. Those are the players that are hurting us. The guys that manage to remain on the team are graduating.

Graduation requires grades. APR actually doesn't measure graduation rates. It measures retention and eligibility. Keep the grades right and keep the kids on campus, you are ok.

Check out Kentucky's basketball APR to see whether graduation matters more than grades. They had a 979 APR for the 09-10 school year even though they lost 5 guys early to the draft.

That's because there is a clause that does not punish schools if players leave for professional sports as long as they are eligible at that time.

We all knew that was going to happen. Let's just move on from this. I applaud the President's decisions. I'm wondering who voted for JSU and SU to play?

It was a forgone conclusion so I'll take a stab at it and say JSU and SU didn't vote against thier own school. JSU and SU had nothing to lose in voting for themselves.

I wonder who that clause was put in there for. Surely it wasn't put there on behalf of FCS schools. We know whose running the NCAA and it's not us, yet we want to punish ourselves even more when we know the NCAA don't give a damn about us.

Don't they still lose the point for retention? I read somewhere that said as long as they are eligible at the time the school only loses 1 point instead of 2.

Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

I don't think that's the case...If it were Kentucky score would essentially be made up of only eligibility side because only a handfull stay throughout their four year term. It is designed not to punish those who historically have sent athletes to the professional ranks. Baseball and basketball are the two benefactors of this.

Nevermind I found it. They basically get a break.

Do student-athletes who leave school early to go pro hurt their teams’ APR?

If a student-athlete is in good academic standing and leaves school early to pursue a professional career, the team is NOT penalized and loses no APR points. But if a student-athlete leaves early and is in poor academic standing, the team loses two points, making it harder for the team’s APR to recover

Not surprised in the vote and won't be surprised if the President's vote no. If not, something is seriously wrong when the AD's and Presidents aren't on one accord. The AD and the President should be on one accord and i'm sure each President has discussed the matter with their A.D. various times.

Re: It's official. SU and JSU have been banned from the SCG.

Why would Alcorn president abstain????

1) He don't wanna affend the two schools that bring folks to his campus and strain the relationship with JSU further after the CCC situation.
2) He's afraid next time MS Gov. suggests merging the three campuses in order to save money JSU will support it
3) He looked at his school numbers and is afraid he'll be on the chopping block next

We'd feel like Tuskegee felt.:snicker:

Alcorn is a land grant institution and is immune to anything the states Gov. can do. It will take Federal action to displace Alcorn.

I hear it's official now. The Presidents voted to ban JSU and SU.

I wouldn't send the BOOM to neither one of those raggedy azz campuses if I were the President of both schools and don't neither one 'em ask JSU to change their schedule for schitt.
And I wouldn't be surprised if some of the fans decided not to go on the road to some of these lower scoring APR hypocrites either.
