Teams glad their playoff football runs still alive on Black Friday

In high school football circles, the day is associated with a deep playoff run.

Black Friday — quarterfinal Friday — arrives for teams like East Feliciana, Southern Lab and White Castle, a trio of area schools fortunate enough to be playing at home.

“It’s the season to be grateful,” White Castle coach Ferrante Dominique said.

White Castle (9-3), seeded 15th in the Class 1A bracket, welcomes No. 7 seed St. Edmund (10-2) for post-Thanksgiving football. No. 12 seed Southern Lab (8-4), another 1A contender, has No. 4 seed South Plaquemines (9-3) at Southern University’s A.W. Mumford Stadium in its quarterfinal. Seeded fourth in 2A, East Feliciana (11-0) faces No. 5 seed Calvary Baptist (11-1) in Clinton.

“The deeper you get in the playoffs, the more important every play seems to be,” East Feliciana coach Cedric Anderson said.

Dutchtown familiar with Westgate’s propensity for upsets

The school’s first district title and 10-0 regular season were signature moments.

Any motivation the Griffins need going into tonight’s Class 5A quarterfinal game against No. 24 Westgate-New Iberia (7-4) can be found in the signature moment that wasn’t.

Three years ago, Dutchtown traveled to New Iberia to face a No. 28-seeded Westgate team in the quarterfinals.

Why this weekend seems to be the one weekend of the playoffs where the weather gets fugged up? lol...Last year it was teh ice/slurry storms

Wet field could work in EF's advantage. Keep Calvary's offense off the field and shorten the game.

Calvary wont be able to pass on EF. EF DB's can lock them up man to man. They had 6 int's(should have been 8, they dropped 2 pick 6's) last week vs Newman. Calvary is going to try to run. No one has been able to pass on EF all season. IMO EF offense is more explosive, with Beckwith @ QB, Robinson @ RB, and Hogan, Matthews, and Ceasor @ Wideout. When Beckwith is a senior, now a sophmore, every team in the country will be recruiting him.

Like I said Calvary wouldnt be able to pass on EF. They only had 56 yards passing.

Congrats EF on being the Class 2A PUBLIC school state champion...

EF has the TALENT to beat Curtis....however, can they execute well enough to beat Curtis.

BTW: next season EF moves up to 3A, and will be in the district with Parkview Baptist and West Feliciana (which should be a GREAT rivalry).

According to EF coach, EF will be better next season, they are young. Thats scary. EF 2nd and 3rd string RB were lost for the season, 1 during the first game. I think 2A is tougher than 3A. John Curtis and Evangel enuff said.

Looks like ole' Baker is going to have it even worse with East Feliciana moving up to our district.
 
Curtis is not going to lose to East Feliciana. Also, Franklinton is going to destroy O.P.Walker, they were denied a trip to the dome last season, this year, those country boys have it on their mind.

Acadiana might finally receive a challenge when they play St. Thomas More.

The Feliciana schools are tearing it up this year with both East and West represented in the semi-finals. West Feliciana definitely has the easier road to the Superdome.

Im telling you they are going to beat Curtis. To many weapons on both sides of the ball. Like one of my friends told me Friday night after seeing EF for the first time, It should be against the law for one team to have that much talent :lol: .

:topic:What if E and W Feliciana combined and made 1 high school. Would they be a tough 4A or 5A school?
 
First, you would have to re-consolidate East and West Feliciana parishes, which hasn't been done since before Louisiana became....Louisiana.... lol...
 
Curtis seeks return to Dome against East Feliciana

The quest for number 24 continues. Last December, John Curtis came up short of winning a 24th state football championship when Evangel derailed the Patriots' express 18-13 in the 2A state title game.

The loss ended a streak of five consecutive state championships for John Curtis. Still, the Patriots have won state titles for 11 of the past 14 seasons.

Remarkably, since winning their first title in 1975, the longest John Curtis has gone without winning a state championship is three years. The Patriots won it all in 1993 and fell short in 1994 and 1995 before earning the championship trophy in 1996.

While virtually everyone expects a John Curtis vs. Evangel rematch in the Superdome on December 10, J.T. Curtis knows there is work to do.

The 11-1 Patriots host 13-0 East Feliciana at 7 p.m. Friday night at Joe Yenni Stadium in Metairie. Not too many guys who passed for more than 1,000 yards the year before would be willing to give up the chance to play quarterback as a senior.

Count East Feliciana High senior Hendrick Taylor in that select number. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Taylor moved back to linebacker over the summer, helping to set the stage for one of the Baton Rouge area’s most impressive success stories.

“Linebacker is where I always wanted to play,” Taylor said. “When I moved to quarterback last year it was tough because they told me I couldn’t play linebacker.

“They said they didn’t want to take a chance on me being caught in the line of fire. That’s where I want to be. I like it there.”

Taylor and fourth-seeded Tigers (12-0) find themselves in a different line of fire this week. EFHS travels to Metairie to take on top-seeded John Curtis (11-1) for a Class 2A semifinal game set for 7 p.m. Friday at Joe Yenni Stadium.
