So things are really bad at SU

Hey 96lioness, no hard feelings about what happened last Saturday....I still love dem Golden Lions as I do all my HBCU's.....I saw it as a situation between 17 to 21 year old YOUNG men who were still in battle mode after a hard faught game where things just got out of hand...but we know all our kids are better than that and we will all bounce back from it....

It is projected that by the year 2012-13, a large number of colleges and universities will be suffering or operating in the red. Dr. Mason warned us of all these budget cuts and they will effect not only SU but every school in the swac. I hope we all survive.

Glad he got JSU on the right track on budget shortfalls long before he left. Our state cuts are not the hatchet job Louisana's is, but he started planning for these days a long time ago. That is where that "out the box" merge plan came from. I still say Mason never had no intention of putting that merge plan into motion because in this state, a college merge that big that don't stand a chance, but when Gov. Haley Burbour asked for out the box thinking on budgets a year earlier, that is what he came up with.

When Mason's plan was leaked, the masses couldn't see the forest for the trees. They saw the word "merge" and didn't give a crap about anything else.

leaked by Alice Harden, who lacks the intellect to even understand what Mason's plan was about.

When they saw "MERGE and HBCU" it was over. Nothing Mason said about it after the Clarion Ledger sued to publish that idea mattered to the masses.

I love bands because it is the best student activity on a college campus. President of AAMU started a fund raising campaign to buy new uniforms for the bands. It was announced that we were about $35,000 short at the end of the fund raiser, however, the band uniforms were ordered and worned on homecoming this year. When he welcomed the homecoming crowd, he asked everyone who purchased a band uniform to stand and be recognized. It was a proud moment for me to be able to stand, but as I stood, I looked around to see who was standing and alums who I would have betted my last dollar on in support of this project did not stand. We can all do something, if it is only $1.00. I hope your fund raiser is successful.

That made me angry... Everyone wants to complaint about the state of the uniforms and instruments but can't write a check. If you have the fiscal ability to write a check or make a donation but fail to do so, you have failed your university so you should shut the hell up and move on...

The way our state govt. fights over money the only way you can get them to get off their duff and start "thinking" is to use terminology like "merging" and "consolidation". That invokes a Pavlovian response in them and actually makes them put forth an effort to think of other ways to save money. Ray Mabus did the same thing years ago. Half of the state legislature is too busy hanging out with lobbyists at Tico's when they are in session. We all saw what happend when the Gov. simply suggested looking into a merger...no motions were made in the house to do so...just a "suggestion", and you see what happend. Mofos had to actually WORK on other things and get it straight because they didn't want to go down that road, which is what the Gov. actually wanted in the first place.

I bear no ill toward Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge, LA), IB4; no hard feelings taken.:) Southern was my 2nd choice when it was time for me to decide where to attend college; I have ALWAYS enjoyed listening to the Human Jukebox and I well remember those days when SU gorilla-stomped us; I also remember those overtimes my boys took SU through! I am the proud mother of a daughter who attends Southern University........I still and will always have much respect for Southern University as well as all of the HBCUs. I love HBCUs and am very passionate when it comes to them.......I wouldn't have $$$$ taken from each of my paychecks if I didn't give a damn about them.

I was going to refrain from commenting on this past Saturday until I saw this post (thank God). While I won't go into detail about what happened (too much incorrect speculation, ignorance, and downright hatred has been spewed already), I will agree with you about the stupid comments made on the fight. Because of my love, respect, and adoration for my beloved UAPB, and because of my great respect and admiration for Southern University, I did not respond because it more than likely would have been taken out of context; I will say it was heartbreaking to see both teams react the way they did ( As with every game, I was in attendance, in my usual seat on the 50-yard line and witnessed the fighting). It is just as disturbing and sad to see the comments made about an institution having financial struggles. Nothing is funny about anyone or anything that is going through any hardship and I'll never understand how others who claim to love God could vomit such negativity and/or find humor in another's misfortune.

I will send the Human Jukebox a small donation, as I have done for our other HBCU brethren. And I honestly hope that Southern University and the Human Jukebox can recover from this temporary hardship
:):):)

I blame Mr. Jackson. Why increase the size of the band in tough economic times by 100 members? What happened to the phrase "quality over quantity"?

Dr. Greggs had the most efficient marching band there was, there was no pork in a Dr. Greggs band.

No!...Why should the kids who always dreamed of marching be turned around not because they couldn't preform...but because of Budget Cuts.....Point Blank....."Why the Budget Cuts in state Jobs and Education?"......Mr. Jindal, You mean to tell me...you can raise millions for a campaign and blow all this money to focus on EVERYTHING obama is doing...but you cant help get the Funding for Education???......(EX.) Ohhh he has to flyyyyy to Washington DC...Ok well that Cost around 5,500 Private Jet...Just to go Stand in front a mic and talk about Our president...That Alone could have been money to help the State...but thats Money down the Drain........Bush did a poor job with Katrina....I didn't hear not one bad thing said about him........but if obama pisses and it splashes just a little bit on the bowl.....OMG here goes Bobby "Put me infront the cameras? Jindal

Yep.
They went from "Can't do shat..........We ain't got shat", to "here is our budget plan" in less than 2 weeks.

They straightened out a lot of shat quick when the word "merger" was spoken. One week people was marching, protesting the THOUGHT of merging Mississippi State with MUW/Delta State and JSU with Alcorn and Valley, to JSU getting Memorial for 3 years with all the profits and Valley getting money for their Gym and Football Stadium repairs the next week.

Interesting! Glad that worked for yall. Here in Louisiana, politics is a whole different ball game.

Amen 96lioness....oh and I remember all those tough, nailbiting, hard fought, overtime games too....they were some good ones....last drive deciding everything....in overtime with fingers, toes, and everything else crossed....lol.....I mean really good football games....without the fight this past one would have been in that book with them...

HBCU Pride!....wish a lot more of these folk on here had some....

Well lets make it simple, Alumni who got it. DONATE back to your schools just like everyone else does. Case closed

SIR-GRAM...I do and always insist that other do....it is the only way we will make it...cant wait and hope that others will...hell they are OUR schools so we should be taking care of OUR business, But you know the sad thing that I have noticed is the mentallity of some of these folks...for them it is what can the school do for me and then that is it...the part about what can I do for the school never enters their mind.....they don't see our schools as many of us do or as folks at PWC's see their schools. People the school gives you tools to go out and be successful, the other part of the deal is when you become successful you are supposed to give back so that the school will be there and be able to help someone else coming behind you be successful as well....wish that ENTIRE message would sink in.....

You know what, Gram and SU are bigger than just me and a rival. I got friends and family somewhat that are apart of SU, Plus im KKPSI and I live for this. Gram or not im going to give something...

"For college bands, we strive to do our utmost" Remember what you pledged for... AEA baby

The Jukebox put on a great show for the Jagfest.

Its sad that more money isn't pumped more into the band program at SU. I know at GSU: Sponsors, Student Fees etc are pumped into the World Famed's account.

A core of 100-200 folk cannot get it done SG. It takes a collective effort from the entire group instead of the 1% who carries the deal.

Nice thought btw.

seriously you dont know what you are talking about....we still use the same amount of busses when we travel. And SU band always paid for their own practice/travel suits. the sive of the band has nothing to do with the money issues
