Six Arrested In Alleged SU Band Hazing....

After reading everybody's post it appears that we all hate what has happened. And we're are hoping for a speedy recovery for the kids in the hospital and justice for those accused... And several of you have posting why (or how) can things like this happen (not just at Southern but an ANY of our schools). I've thought about it and this is what I think:

While none of us (on here) were directly involved, I think we all are complicit (to a small degree) in creating the culture and atmosphere where this type of behavior. Think about it....

We all get on websites like this one and reminisce about the 'good ole days'. We're quick to point-out how things were better way back when. We romanticize our bands, our fraternities, our sororities (and other social groups). And guess who's reading all of this? Kids....

The kids take our stories and try to emulate what they've read/heard. They try to out-do the previous generation, in order to make a nema for themselves and to gain respect from those who came before them...

I know it was like that in the Boom. Us old heads are still quick to compare today's band woth the bands we marched in. And we're quick to tell stories (and lies) about who did this, and who did that, and what happened on this trip, and what happened at that game, and so on.... And the younger generation gets enamored by our stories, and they go out and try to 'top' the stories they've been told.... And this can lead to what's happened in Baton Rouge...

It's all sad and also avoidable.

Bandheads, we HAVE to become a stronger presence in our bands. We have to BE THERE to help provide 'direction', 'tradition' and 'leadership'. And 'discipline'. We can't sit in the stands next to the band and criticize. We've got to get more involved... I've got to get more involved. I'll admit, I got hazed when joining the Boom, but it was all in fun.. I never felt my life was being threatened.

Let's bring it back, people... This isn't what being in a marching band is about... It cain't be....

Bands and hazing....Why am I surprised. Boy, since bands get a little exposure at halftime and such, them fools think they're something.

I wonder what happens when the victims march in the band again...How are their section mates going to treat them? How is the band going to treat them...

No fraternity, sorority, or band is worth that crap. I don't have that need to feel like I belong that bad. My sister, bless her, wanted to be a Delta so bad and she did it and doesn't regret anything. That was her choice and I will never think any less of her, but I wish a muthafugga in ANY frat or band would have put his hands on me ... his frat days would have been DONE, permanently.

There was this one time, back in band camp.............:lol::lol::lol:

The 7th student turned himself in today. The boys in the hospital are improving, but still not out of the woods. :(

The TV news has picked up on it here since those 2 clown's from Mississippi was arrested in this.
It hit all 3 TV stations yesterday on all newscast's complete with mug shots.:shame:

Hope they get better with no long term side effect's from their injuries.

It's hit all of them.

I saw a clip of it on a couple of cable news station's.
One of them could have been CNN.........Probably was.
They start off by showing closeup's of SU's band playing in the stands at the B.C. with a reporter talking over the video, telling about what happened.

I think that's part of the problem. Back then when it was openly done it was almost the norm. Now since it's been made illegal it has gone underground which makes things more dangerous. Then add that to the fact that old heads always brag on how "real" it was back then.

You preaching right there...but then when an incident like this comes out you get statements like " we never did no crazy ish like that when I was in the band/frat"...etc....I mean was it real or not...

:lmao:
Statement Tis true....

:clap::clap:

Man you youngins need to stop. Yall sound like the gang bangers who say the old G's brag about who they killed, then went to jail and wrote kiddie books. :smh: Stop being followers and learn to be leaders. Obviously it is still your fault. You can count the number of times on one hand where folks got hurt back in the days because someone stood up and said "There is a difference in hazing and being ignorant". Followers don't say anything they just go along for the ride. Leaders step up and stop the bull hist.

Thanks Cee. I have never heard no old head say that we whooped somebody so bad they went to the hospital. And like someone said, we know that some stuff got embellished like an old school uncle you got in your family talking about the old days. Don't mean you go out and try to do that isht. Hell my old man told me back in the day they threw him and his brothers in the pond and to them to start swimming as a way to teach them how too swim in the country of Terry, Ms.. But me and my cousins were not stupid enough to do no dumb isht like that. We looked at my Dad and and my uncles like this>>>:retard: then started @ them crazy mofos for doing it.

Most of the time when I have an old head talk about what happened during our time or earlier.......someone would always say......YOU CAN'T DO THAT THESE DAYS. I know we didn't try to duplicate what the 70s cats did in the 80s. Even Doc told us things were different then. Heck they threw his arse in the Lake on campus in the 69 for becoming band director according to him. Aint none of us thought about doing nothing like that. Common Sense has to take over. Some folks just don't have any. Now these kids will pay the price. I wish I would hear one of them cats say we did this because the old school did it back in the day. When they have been told you can't do what you heard. Half of it was probably not even true anyway or sounded worse than it really was. :shame:
