This situation is so sad. All these young folks are in a terrible situation trying to belong. :smh: Young kids need to realize that you can never live up to the old days because that time has passed. Enjoy your era for your time to will pass.

The school shooting wasn't pushed under the rug either! It was on tv and the newspaper! Those kids involved in that bs were kicked out of school and two of them didn't even attend Grambling! The University has made the necessary changes to try to prevent that from happening but it's not promised because many come to GSU for Springfest from other Universities, as long as no one got hurt that's the most important thing! GSU handled their bizz, we don't think our shat don't stink like SU peeps do and overlook things! GSU takes immediate action because Grambling hates negative press but SU's band is always in negative press about hazing or fighting or something! One shooting with nobody hurt on GSU's campus WOW, doesn't happen consistently vs constant hazing allegations towards SU's Band putting two peeps in intensive care, there is no comparison so stop reaching! Your'e mad at the wrong peeps bruh! Now i'm finshed good day peeps! Lunch Time!

Come on naw brah with all this casting stones, it was a band member in GSU band that died "supossingly" in his sleep..I know the story behind that so just chill.. you are sort of acting childish about this whole incident man...

1. The individuals involved need to be totally disconnected from the university... expulsion and charges pressed.
2. Moving forward students have to keep being made aware of the consequences of their actions.
3. Hope students stop being so STUPID to allow someone to beat them to near death to play a horn in a marching band...

(good luck with the third one)

First, I hope all of the students injured make a full recovery. I wish nothing but the best for them.

Now with that said, for this situation to improve, EVERYONE needs to punished. They all signed the agreement and knew what was up. The 6 that did the beating need to go to jail. Period. But the others that allowed themselves to be beat AFTER signing the anti hazing agreement should also be punished. They are wrong also, they are not innocent victims. If you let someone hit you with a 2x4 just 1 time and don't respond you are a participant, not a victim. IMHO, their parents should not be able to sue the school for nothing. Their children made a choice. If it happened on campus or under the knowledge or direction of a school official, that would be different. But this was something they chose to do.

Co-sign. You have to attack the culture that continues to support hazing and yes, it has to be addressed with the ones who allow themselves to be hazed. One of the young men refused to participate in the hazing, he left. They must understand that you do not have to submit to hazing. Now, if they pull a gun on you and put it to your head and make you go to an off campus site, that is kidnapping and a few other crimes.

But even before he withdrew form the initiation, he subjected himself to approximately 50 swats. At some point, the band world should take backseat to manhood, and as a man, at some point, band becomes secondary. Individually, I don't have that need to belong so bad that I subject myself to that kind of punishment. This generation feels the need to belong to a group to prove their self-worthiness.

Preach!

Honestly, I can not and will not wrap my brain around this business of pledging a band section. Where the hell are the section leaders? Some of what I've read/heard is much worse than what I went through to join the Boom, TBS and AKA combined in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Hazing was legal back then, but folks weren't that crazy. :lecture:

My section leader did not stand for extracurricular crap. Maestro was all about the business of music and everyone knew it. Tower of Power was one of the best sections in the Sonic Boom, with good reason. I learned discipline, stamina and camaraderie, in addition to musicianship, under his leadership. After spending so much time with him and Harold J. , we did not have time for this other stuff. :retard:

There seem to be a pathology that has crept into the psyche of our young adults that was not prevalent when I was in school. Not sure from whence it came, but it needs to be eradicated. :(

Exactly. I didn't wanna bring it up and I won't.

Shawiggi was underground all for not back in the day. Aint no way you would have hit me 50 times. Blows would have had to be exchange long before it got that far and my boys on line would have had my back. If not then I would have rolled out and never looked back.

Man sometime you got to stop the madness. I tell you I've seen some wild mess and it was also funny but nobody almost died behind it. We just laughed it off later on...

But if this don't send a message then I don't know what will.
Man all this for some loud blowing and straight lines...SMH

Don't know if this will send a message or not. There have been deaths tied to hazing in in the not to distant past and we continue to see stories like this.

Right right right!

I am much older than all of you. I was in college in the 70s when frats/sororities/band OPENLY hazed. But even then, there was not this level of brutality. I wanted to be an AKA since I was a little girl, but no way in hell was I going to let them physically or financially exploit me.

I think that's part of the problem. Back then when it was openly done it was almost the norm. Now since it's been made illegal it has gone underground which makes things more dangerous. Then add that to the fact that old heads always brag on how "real" it was back then.

Maybe the old school can help.............but I've wondered.........what the hell does hazing help in a band anyway? Especially if it's a person who carries themselves in a respectable manner.

Exactly -- except that the stories that the old heads tell are embellished beyond reality. The youngsters try to top the stories that were not true to begin with.

Hazing always leaves the door open for a jealous person to take their envy out on a pledge; One pledge line will try to be harder, meaner and tougher than the previous line. It's a snowball effect. Anyway this is not a SU problem this is a nation wide problem at our HBCU's.

GSU handled their bizz

Just like the time when GSU almost had its doors shut when the school needed the state, the governor, and the UL system to help maintain its accreditation. Like I said before, every school needs to sweep around its front porch.

JAG89 Just like the time when GSU almost had its doors shut when the school needed the state said:
Now yall are getting personal on here and seriously don't know what you speak of! William Coefield died in his sleep because he didn't take his medicine, he had a bad heart! The University thought he had got hazed just because he was a band member, an autopsy was taken and it showed it was his heart! His mom would have sued the sh!t out of the University and Band if that were the case, she don't play! The person talking about accreditation, GSU has put that behind us we have been through positive transformations and the University has increased it's standards tremendously and now we are selective admissions and we are attracting better students! I pray for a speedy recovery for the students in ICU but the book needs to be thrown at the students doing the hazing! That's the only way students will get the message! It's sad but true! I will keep SU in my prayers!

I really didn’t mean to make it personal, but my only intent was to point out to usatoday that GSU has or had its share of problems. Go back and read so of usatoday's replies. He's a GSU fan or alum that thinks that everybody at Southern keeps things in the closet and everybody at GSU handles their business. Usatoday makes it personal when he says such things.

Right. That's why when I hear these old school folks start that mess I look at them side ways. :retard:

Yeah, there was some hazing, but JSU had Dean Johnson, an Omega who would put a chapter on probation faster than a pledge could recite Invictus or spit out the greek alphabet. And the Boom had another Omega man, Harold J. Haughton, who didn't play that shyt. He stressed that we would be ladies and gentlemen.

Now, things happened, but nothing to the point of hospitalization. Heck, band camp was enough to weed out the pretenders. you wanted your band members on the field in top shape for show time.

Well i can't tell usatoday what to say and i don't do the personal thing! I just voice my opinion and then i leave it alone, most of the time if i don't have nothing good to say i don't say anything because that's how i was raised! Usatoday speaks for himself, i speak for myself: that's why i don't see why people bring the entire Universities into things, i can see if the Media Relations person at Grambling State came on here and said on behalf of Grambling State University then that's different but going back and forth insulting each other doesn't solve nothing! That's so high schoolish and immature peeps! The focus should be on the well being of the two young men and pray that they have a full recovery and justice being served towards the dudes that did this stupid sh!t!

I totally agree.
