Some of the arguments from Native Africans about African Americans not living the culture of Africa won't hold water. Well I saw photos of some Nigerian brides in white wedding dresses,with the grooms wearing tuxedo's...so that's African???

I DGAF what the dictionary says or if white folks originated the term...hell, they're the originators of some other words too. I was born black and gonna die black. If you black folks think you're anything else, then go right ahead. It's funny black folks have such an issue w/being called what they are, all of a sudden.

Honestly, white folks came up with the stick by which a black person is called a black person.....technically, O'bama is black.

But even they are fooling themselves. If it was mandated that every person over say 25 years of age, had to a have dna test to link trace your genes, we would find that many people are a lot less, black, white or otherwise.

yeah, but ya can't get rapped up in what a symbolic color/name represents because you can always come up with something, pro or con, that defeats the argument. for example i oft wondered in my early years why we were called "black" when err body be wearing black at funerals(and yeah, black is most associated with negative). welp, one take i heard is that black is a symbol of strength in times of dispare. now that may have been spin from blacks arguing this point at the time, but i mean,, why do judges wear black robes? surely being a judge is not a bad/negative thing.

i can see several points though; we not black per se,, just a term. welp, whites aren't white per se,, they are pink or something like that.

as a "Spoc-ish" engineer, i don't see a problem with the scientific term negro/negroid(or whatever it is), although black is fine with me. the scientific term is the most non-spin name if you really look at it; not all these names from a particular era/political-social movement/cause.

The only additional thing i would ask is why is it that we seem to be the main group of people in U.S. that get so bent out of shape about what we are called? why can't we take what people call us and flip it like, for example, southern whites? no matter what you call them, they seem to embrace it and turn it into a positive symbol or at least have so much pride in their own beliefs, who they are and their way of life that they don't give a fugg about what you call them because to them YOU'RE(the groups/movements/society that attack them I'm saying,, not you personally) the moron, YOUR way of life sucks, not them or theirs.
 
No, we should not drop African. Most of us cannot trace our lineage to its country of origin... only the continent. The others who no longer choose use the origin of their ancestors as part of their identity, get to choose not to. I can choose not to use the continent, but I cannot choose to use the country. Are my peeps from Nigeria? Ghana? Senegal? Angola? I cannot claim any of those. All the cool web sites that help folks trace their ancestors, don't help me.
I choose African-American because that's the best ancesteral identity I got.

And likewise I befriended a cool brother from Zaire after I graduated college. He and I became best friends while I lived in Dallas. Unlike the African people the writer of the letter refers to my good friend thought it was so very appropriate for us to be called African Americans. I remember being nervous about meeting his dad who was coming to the United States to live (his dad was a former high ranking government official before Mobutu came to power). He would always tell me how proud of a man his dad was and because the African thing (leather medallions and other African paraphanelia) was so popular at that time (the mid to late 80s African movement) for us young black brothas I wondered what he would think of black people in America. It didn't take long for me to find out that he thought the idea of black Americans considering themselves African was great.

It doesn't take much to realize that the writer felt the same way he does now before he went on his mission to Africa. What a silly piece of shat.

i hear you and i don't know, guess it that identity crisis in us since we were given names once brought over here. i never stated that i have a problem with being called Black(i was acknowledging the point Jared made while folks stated what they would rather be called, since he brought it up), actually i've never stated that i'd rather be called any of that, i don't have a particular option or "rather be called", just don't call me n****r or pikanini(sp) of course, lol. issues are steadily growing to be overly concerned about whether you should be called this or that. however i did say i embrace the term African American because we gave us that name, and to me it symbolized an empowerment, stating we will no longer be given a name by you... no more, "your name is Toby". i guess folks don't look that deep into it. but based on what i got from the the article, it really is talking about pure bred Africans having a problem, not African-Americans, or Blacks, Negroes, or whatever folks would rather be called.
