:lol: Gul, this was back in 93.

We were in the drive thru at Burger King takin our sweet azz time at the menu, when this drunk whyte dude and his girlfriend was in a convertable behind us. I guess he got impatient and start cussing and telling us to hurry up. So u know me, I was giggling while da Miami chics were cussin and tellin him to STFU. So he drove around us and started going back and forth with da guls and next thang I know, he yelled out "ya dayum Spook!!" :lol:

So I'm like :eek: cause that was my VERY first brush with racism but in da meantime, these gutta Miami guls done got out da car and went over to his car......there is another car in front of us with some other students and they were like "what's going on?" I told them, "that whyte dude just called us a spook!!" Why they got out the car?? :lol:

And once the store manager got wind of what happened, he refused to serve the whyte dude even after he apologized. :nod: :lol:

Dat's what happened. :tup: :lol:
 
I'd rather be referred to an a Negro. I ain't from Africa, nor is my skin color anywhere close to being the same as my black dress shoes. As far as ancestry, if we all went by that, then everyone in the world is African.

Black is cool with me.
I've never thought anything about being called Black man.
 
Colored was used here in America to define Black people with White ancestry.I have seen "jet black" Black people with White features. lol.

Anyway, I can understand why some people have objections to "African American". I remember when they first started using the term, a lot of us in college did not like the term b/c we had become accustomed to "Black American".

Me being a "history buff" I read all the contributions that Africans made to civilization that were not taught in school at that time. The Moors,especially the tribe of Moors from the Senegal valley,developed the drainage and sewer systems in Spain,built libraries, were the first to perform caserian(sp) births,developed etiqutte, created the numeral "Zero" invented the telescope and whole lot other scientific advancements. Timbuktu during the "Dark Ages" of Europe,had Universities.

The Benin tribe in Nigeria developed the lost wax process using melted iron,gold and other metals. That same process is use today to create "engine blocks" for our cars and for the majority the steel,aluminum products used today.

The East Africans developed the lanuage Swahili for trade all along the East coast of Africa. They spoke two languages their native tribal lanuguage and Swahili for trade transcactions with different tribes up and down the East Coast of Africa.

Europe is even named after an African godess "Europa".

After learning all that for me anyway I did not mind being called African American especially after I starting doing research on Black inventors in America. I was looking for info on Fredrick Jones the brotha who invented the air conditioning system of refrigerated trucks, and the encyclopedia had him listed as an American which is true but they did not mentioned his race. They could have used Black American but after looking at brotha's and sistah's who made technological contributions to America and the books just had them listed as Americans. See this is significant because at that time it was a debate that Black people did not make any contributions to civilization. Anyway these were some of the points that were being debated about using African American or "Pan-Africans",Pan meanining world wide.
 
No the NAACP should not change its name. It was named at a time when that moniker was acceptable and for historical reasons it should not change.

I agree with this.

Actually, all the comments in this thread are amusing to an extent. What you call yourself is a personal thing. I choose the term African American. In the end we each should be comfortable with our choices. That is the beauty of living in a democracy ... well, what is left of the democracy in this country.

Wow!!! Some of you all will sell your soul to make white people happy. Why must black people always find a way to try and please white America? They aren't trying to satisfy you. Sad I tell you.
 
choosing the "label" that appeals to you the most will not have any effect on the way blacks/africans are viewed in the U.S.
 
Why would one rather be called Negro, when that word came from "n****r"? Like someone said the white man made the dictionary... What ever they call us is something they made up...
It is almost like a parent naming a child the child have no say so.. So to me for us to except a name given to us with out our say so helps the mind set of this country that we will always be beneath them. Let Al Sharpton and Bill Cosby come up with a name for us...
 
Well that's where "n****r" came from, which ever came first they both aren't far off from each other....Black,Negro,n****r all are names we didn't choose..Who gave the clear man the name White or "Caucasian"
My whole point is, we are being called something another group of people took a quick look at us and came up with.
